Its because of the 250cc licence restriction, the GSX-R, CBR, ZXR and FZR are the biggest and fastest (excluding 250 two strokes) bikes that a learner/ restricted licence can have...... therefore they mark up the prices for them..... Downside, forking out the $$$ now for one.... plus side..... good resale value...Originally Posted by menace

I'm sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong...... the new 250 gixxers only have two cylinders will the old ones have four, so a good old one should be quicker than a new one.Originally Posted by menace
That's the one mate, only 2 cyl.
But I must admit, that GSX250 is a nice wide ride (good sized seats etc.)

yes the gsx is a 2-cylinder but wasn't he talking about gsx-R'sOriginally Posted by Antallica

. TS is right though they have great resale value and you end up getting a real good 400 or somewhat good 600 for the same price as a good 250.

Supply and demand. If there were more used models available, they'd be cheaper.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but they stopped making the GSX-R250 in '91 or there abouts. You can't buy one brand new anymore (and if they're telling you it is new, they're lying black and blue). The GSX250 (which was what I was considering buying last year) can still be bought brand new.
When I had my '87 Honda CBR250, I test rode a new GSX250, and was bitterly dissapointed. It felt slower, and had a "cheaper" feel to it, almost like it was made to be as cheap as possible. It is however, a comfortable ride, and is more than ok to learn on, I'm talking from having owned the CBR.
I would recommend looking for an older "R" version of a bike, in good nick. You'll have a little more fun in my opinion.
no man if you going back that long zxr or cbr are the way to go. And then if they are out of your price range fzr and gsxr and then just start removing th 'r' sOriginally Posted by StoneChucker

try buying a *performance* brand new 250cc road bike, and see how much you'll be forking out....$15000 for an RS250, $15000 for a KTM (awesome motard), $8000 for a VTR250. you could by 3 or 4 10 year old 250's for those prices
