Solar eclipse over the next hour

The moon will cover the sun most at 5.42 and it will end 6:44.

Now get out there, leave the computer!

IF YOU WANT TO GET A GOOD LOOK AT IT

A normal CD (Compact Disc, music CD) is about 2% transparent. If you press one up to your face and look through it you should be able to see it, but it's quite bright, SO GET TWO CDs!

//EDIT: Better make that 4 CDs :]. Oh, and make sure the CDs have the shiny stuff on both sides, ones with thick paint on the top wont work.

It's only a partial. The next full one isn't until 2028.

You can even look at the shadows on the ground from leafes on a tree. It works like a pinhole camera. The sunspots on the ground will have the shape of the eclipse.

We are seeing a slight concave mark on the top left of the sun. Of course that could be the retinal damage kicking in!

Seriously though, if you want to look at it, get someone to hold some binoculars up to the sun, and you hold a bit of card or paper a bit away from where your eyes go. The shadow created gives a mirror of what is happening up there. It wont be really cool though, as others have pointed out it is only partial.

Hey - the CD trick works!!

Cool bananies, thanks bright spark. The sunlight has gone a little dull here in New Plymouth, so it's like a winter's evening not summer, and I was thinking boooooring.

But now I can see that the sun is one third covered by the moon.

Must get out crystals and wiccan gadgets and dance thricewise naked around the washing line or whatever is appropriate on these occasions.

    Illuc ivi, illud feci.

Coool!! Either method worked for me, although it took a bit to get the binoculars aimed without looking through them.
    Cheers,

Looked at it through a rolled up sheet of window tinting film. (rolled film held across the eyes, NOT held like a telescope). Worked a treat!

got this thru 3 bike visors and a pair of sunglasses held over the front of the camera, with a polarizer on.. not too bad considering!

and my mum always told me I'd go blind playing with myself..

Cool, just did the three cd thing, had to change back to the dark universe so I could post again!
Still covered slightly, about a quarter of what it looks like in bugjuices pic.

Does freaky things to the light too! The sky is clear but it's like all the windows in the house have a slight tint, then you go outside and everything still looks tinted, spooky!
