help. gpx 750 just died

hi i bought an 88 gpx (60,000 ks) yesterday in christchurch and rode her back to wellington and she never missed a beat the whole way .i rode to work this morning...ok but on the way home she has just died .i got as far as the city and as i was pulling up at a set of lights, she died and woudlnt fire back up.i eventually push started it and just about got home and she has died again.its like there is little or no power coming from the battery ,just a few clicks when i try to start her but thats about it.i find it strange that this has happened as i was riding?(there is petrol in the bike). i found she wanted to die unless i kept the revs up really hi .i have no idea what to do ,can someone please help or call me on 04 3861727.

Sounds like you may have a charging issue.

It will either be a knackered battery that doesn't hold a charge or your charging circuit is not working.

Check your battery first to see if it is flat (use a multimeter to get the voltage, should be about 12.5v). If it is flat charge it up and check it again. Do a visual inspection to see if any of the cells are damaged.

Then check the voltage in the charging circuit with the engine running, it should be about 14.5v which is enough to keep the battery going and replace what is taken from it. If it is lower than this then it is the charging circuit.

if your battery has anything less than 12 volts, the chances one cell is stuffed and its time to get a new one.

i had a similar issue with the boys 250 the charging coils couldnt keep up with the juice being sucked by the headlight so i had to get another set of charging coils from kiwibiker conquistidor

3 options battery kafuut to the point where it is shorting the charging cct. Very unlikely. There is more likely a charging problem. This doesn't mean the battery is off the hook though.

Either the rectifier/regulator is fried (so not passing thru) or the stator needs a rewind (do a search for Halsey 0-9-534 4161 they can rewind if necc & do a better job than many).

But also worth checking that nothing has become unplugged/burnt including connection to stator.

thanks for all the help on this one .i have since had the problem sorted and i'm back on the road thanks to the guys at boyle kawasaki. it turned out to be a snapped alternator belt which in turn resulted in the battery losing all charge. apparently the GPX750 is one of the few models that uses one . it had deteriorated from little use and then snapped under major use.
