Question 2003 Suzuki GSX 250- buying tips

    Hi everyone.
I am thinking of buying suzuki GSX 250 as my first bike. Did anyone had this bike? Is it ok to learn on? considering its weight of 180kg this could ve been the problem...

Also, does anyone know how much horsepower it's got?

    Cheers

Apparently there's already been a discussion about this bike. Have a browse through it if you like.

Good sensible learners/commuters bike. Not as sporty as it looks but good and practical. You will probably quickly get bored of the power it probably makes about 30-35rwhp. Should probably still get up to 140-150kmh if you push it

Hmmm, actually there wasn't much information on that link was there.
    Anyhoo:

    GSX 250 FX 2003
    Overall Length: 2 070 mm (81.5 in)
Overall Width: 735 mm (28.9 in)
    Overall Height: 1 055 mm (41.5 in)
Seat Height: 745 mm (29.3 in)
    Wheelbase: 1 400 mm (55.1 in)
Ground Clearance: 150 mm (5.9 in.)
Dry Weight: 151 kg (332 lbs)
    Engine type: Water-cooled 249 cc inline-4, DOHC, 16 valves. 40 ps (29 kW)/ 14.000 rpm, 20 Nm (2.1 kg-m)/ 13.000 rpm.

Looks to me like the power and weight are suitable for a learner, but it'll still be a capable enough bike for you to be proud of it and enjoy riding it for some time.
It will be far easier for a learner rider than the much lighter (and much more brutal) 2-stroke 250s would be. It'll be fine.

I ttook mine to the sprints and did a genuine 100 miles an hour on it. (161kph)
    Standing quarter I managed 15.75

The bike is roughly equvalent to a hyosung gt250r.
Mine did 60,000 kays without skipping a beat before It got bent between two cars.
Wish I still had it, It was a great bike.

Slightly slower off the mark than a 150 2 smoker but more legs up top.

Think Ive read they put out around 33-36 horsepower but don't worry too much about that, Figures like that never tell the whole story.

Heavy compared to modern sportsbikes but that aint a problem due to lowish seat hight and good steering.

I reccomend it as a first bike. Some may say you will get bored with what power It has but I think that helps to develop roadcraft. Mine was never too far behind bigger bikes.

www.cliffhanger.org.nz has the results of old sprints.

Just the usual bike stuff aye, didn't have any bike specific things crop up with mine aye.

    Usual stuff to check:

Chain - rusty? worn? lubed? under-overtightned?

Tyres - condition, wear pattens (can show up a bent or unbalanced bit.

Brakepads and rotors - how long 'till they run out!? any scoring or warping of rotors?

General condition - does it match the kays on the clock?

Bentness - look at frame, swingarm forks and wheels.

    Rust!

Bearings - Headstock bearing swingarm bearings and wheel bearings, any exessive play or binding?

Engine oil - dirty? foamy (walk away str8 awy if its foamy!)
    last filter and oil change??

over 38,000 kays - have the valve clearances been done?
(not a huge major on a GSX Invader but still worth doing)

Plus probably more I can't think of right now!

If you can check all this yourself do it.
If not get a mate or shop to do it.

Low brakepads or whatever does'nt make the bike a bad buy its jaust a good idea to know what needs doing and how badly so you can factor that into the price and your buying decisions...

Oh, and fork seals do check them too.

If ya just buy it and dont check anything it could end up like this

Just ask Coyote about his VFR400!

Probably could - i'm 6'0 and could easy get two feet down.

I had one as my first bike a blue one.

Beaut, I loved it. Started yerning for abit more power after about a year.

in that year i did lots of miles (bloody GiJoe) trouble free.

    What to look out for

I just might add ...check da breaks ...so they are not warped or bent
Breaking should go smooth not jerky, brake level should be steady and not pulsing. check the disc's for small cracks around the holes, and for overall wear... just slide finger across brake discs...checking against factory spec's should help too
Buying bike is warped discs and not having front brake taught me that.

Well I make sure of that

If you took the engine out and the fairing off (the Invader one),...it looks like to me you're left with a GS500E. They look identical as far as wheels, frame, tank, etc go.
That may explain the quite high weight for a 250. Look like a great learner bike though.
