Tsuen Shing two-way radio helmet bling

Well, dabbling with the idea of having communications between a ride captain and a TEC or general other pisstalking - I found on 'tardme an offering, which I accepted.

A couple of days later and a nice little package turns up on the doorstep and I rip into it ... four boxes for two units worth of electrical bling stuff!

Now this is just a way of testing the waters so to speak, I'll be going for a Baehr system once I get my larger bike!

The system comprises of a 2W radio unit, base charger and a handsfree kit. The helmet kit comes with two leads ... a jack in for the PTT (press to talk) button, the ear pieces and mouth piece attachment and a jack to connect that to the radio.

Rechargeable batteries are included and already charged! Bonus!

Various channels, squelch functions etc. al (which I will not bore you with) and RTFM guff all in there.

Right, pretty easy to stick it into the helmet. Just gotta work out where your lugholes are and locate the velcro hooks on the ear pieces and press them in, trail the wire over the top and make sure the voice piece is on the left side ear piece. Stick the handy dandy mic in the front and yer away laffing!

Locating the PTT button the handlebar of your ride is the next thing to do! Right, just have to test the bugger now!

I was thinking of installing an amp and a woofer into it also... but the roasting oven took the back space up! This will also handily install into my Boba Fett outfit as well!

That looks suspiciously like the crap that Pinfolds from Rotorua sells. The radios should be OK, but the "system" will fail between two weeks and a month, tops, depending on how frequently you use it.

The weakest link is the plugs. They're not designed to be plugged and unplugged. The first thing you will notice is one rider not being able to hear, or the other rider not being able to be heard. About the same time you'll lose hearing in one of the earpieces.

The next weakest link is the PTT button. They're not designed to be pushed, and the sealed switch will fail.

The next weakest link is the foam protector on the microphone. A bit of friction, like from taking a helmet on and off, wears them out. In about the same time as the rest of the system fails.

Mrs H and I have pissed around with this set-up on several occasions, having made an investment in a couple of nice Uniden UH044 walkie talkies (any reasonable offer accepted for these).

A Baehr will work better for you. The reason we haven't got such a system is because I don't want to have to ride all the way to Henderson to ask the questions the web site doesn't answer. I have been stunningly underwhelmed by kit floggers on too many occasions to attempt to gather up the strength necessary. I don't care about the cost. I just can't cope with disappointment.

Meanwhile we'll continue to use our Blueants.

The whole point of going riding with the missus is to gain brownie points for spending time with her without having to talk.

I disagree my friend...I happen to have a pinfolds system that has lasted well with frequent use all this year...I have the mototalkie setup and it has done superbly well (and resonably priced at only $300) throughout this time. Furthermore, when I was setting the system up to work between my fathers Baehr system and mine, Mike Pinfold was extremely helpful assisting us with technical advice and also made an adapter plug for the Baehr system to work with his push to talk system. We rode all the way to the Brass Monkey chatting all the way...and at the time my dad had a radar detector and I didn't...hence the comms came in handy when his detector went off

I do believe that it is money well spent when you consider the cost's of other systems with similar features....maybe you need to be a little more gentle, Mrs H will most likely prefer this too!

Kind sir i can vouch for the Baehr 100% it is well worth the $$. I have the Verso XL conected to a Tait TM8250 which has the main unit install under the seat and the remote head unit on a RAM Mount, i also run an AM/FM MP3 Radio through it acompanied by my X50, I have converted the pass light switch on my bike to be the PTT button.

I am a motorcycle courier so the system operates for upto 12 hours a day and i have not had any problems with it since i installed it almost a year ago. I am currently looking at installing the Bluetooth modual so i can also connect my phone without cables.

So just stump up the cash and purchase one .........

Just one word of advice send your helmets to Tony and get him to install the head sets he does a really tidy job both mine are installed in shoei's

It's nice I guess to know that one Pinfolds system has worked for somebody. Our persistence has gone way beyond my normal "three strikes" policy. I've got about 4 PTT buttons as well as two walkie talkies lying around, if you or anybody else is interested in them.

Well zeocen and I decided to give his ZZR600 a shake-up run and test the radio set up today. Once we got used to using them, it was easy-peasey as you like. Just used it to talk about general direction things and other trivial stuff.

Range is okay and was able to talk to each other a klick or so out no worries. Just have to learn the pause before you speak to allow your full sentence to be heard from the beginning.

Was funny listening to the radio chatter from other users every now and then as we came into range! Will conduct more extensive testing later (any excuse for a ride!)

Had to stop to adjust the speaker pads in the helmet to stop them painfully squishing in the ol'noggin at places

but once sorted was happy as peas in a pod

Was good to use to communicate when parked up without having to yell with the helmets on!

Hi gijoe1313. How's the pinfold system holding out. I've just got myself a couple of radio's with head sets thrown in. Only problem is they are all attached. (see photo below) The boom mike is not quite long enough and when I have the ear piece in, the mike is sitting on my cheek rather than in front which, inside the helmet, stops them working.
My options are to pull it apart and wire on a different set of speakers so I can mount the mike in front. Or I could replace the headset with something that actually works.

Are you still using the pinfolds and do they actually work??

I've been using my system infrequently and it still works just fine, how it would stand up to a daily hammering hasn't been found out yet!

Most of the time, I solo ride and when it comes to a group ride or a long ride with another biker it does come in handy! "I need to pee" "I have an insect argrgghghghghghhhhhhhh...." "watch out for dead possum/shite" "ooh see that pretty dolly bird" etc etc.

Handy for directions "left turn" "right on roundabout" "stop here you plonker"
