I've bought both the Tim Hanna books while in NZ, and loved them both. He certainly brings out the real men, I think.
I'm not sure if you can buy it in NZ, and it may well be a touch US-centric, but Kevin Cameron's book 'Top Dead Center' (! US spelling) is fascinating, a collection of his writings from Cycle and Cycle World. He makes technical subjects understandable, he's definitely 'been there, done that' and is uncompromising of opinion.
Lighter stuff and not racing oriented, Peter Egan's books 'Leanings' and Leanings 2' are worth a read, being accounts of growing up as a motorcycle enthusiast and stuff on vintage bikes and their pleasures.
    Nice summer reading.
    Cheers

PS if anyone wants me to send any of my 'recommendations' from here, just let me know, altho' probably Amazon is as good a place as any.
PPS if anyone has a line on Aaron Slight's book, could you let me know - seems like it's out of print and I haven't been able to find a copy in NZ at all.
PPPS - did I hijack your thread? Sorry, mate, didn't mean to!

No not at all. The thread's about reading and some of the books that we've read. These ones all have octane as a theme so they sortof fit the KB psyche. I posted the reviews because I thought some other KBers might like to read them as well. Love to hear what others have been reading too.

Well I had to say something, every person who hears I have read that book starts to tell me about how much of a kiwi battler he was without knowing anything of the true story.

Agreed, it is a must-read for any kiwi remotely interestred in bikes. I think we're agreed that it's not a negative portrail at all, quite the contrary, it's just different to what you expect - and totally fascinating.

I could not agree more, you provide a great summary of what came from reading that book.
