Merit in NOT buying petrol on Feb 22?

Got this sent to me in an email:

"Feb 22 Don't Buy Petrol Day...please do this, it's very important! Time we got together as a nation...let this be the start. We're so slack at standing up...let's be heard JUST DO IT :-)

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN NEW ZEALAND DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF PETROL FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.

AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES.

THEREFORE FRIDAY FEBRUARY 22nd HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED STICK IT UP THEIR *@!' DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT
BUY A SINGLE DROP OF PETROL THAT DAY. THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT.

WAITING FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES ? IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED LONG AGO? THE PRICES JUST KEEP GOING UP AND WE NEED TO STOP IT

PETROL PRICES ARE CAUSING OTHER EFFECTS; AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, AS ARE TRUCKING COMPANIES . THIS INCREASES PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING,
BUILDING SUPPLIES MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY,WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE FEBRUARY 22nd THE DAY CITIZENS OF NEW ZEALAND SAY 'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH' "

Personally I am not too worried, my opinion has always been: "As the price of petrol rises, only the devoted will be on the road"

But perhaps they have a point? Perhaps I should join in, be part of something bigger then a Saturday night pissup?

May the bridges I burn light the way.

The bottom line is that the petrol you buy today was paid for 3 or 4 weeks ago and you're only hurting the franchisees for a day....not the oil companies. Then you have to buy more petrol the following day or you have to buy the petrol the day before either way balancing out the petrol station's yield..this would only have an effect is if the non-purchase was maintained for a few consecutive days.

This has been done in other countries and didn't work....wasn't unanimous anyway.

    Or the 23rd. I concur.

My personal protest is not to buy anything in the shop which is not vehicle related. I know that will have sod all result either, but it makes me feel better. What's the world coming to when you can buy tinned corn or baked beans at your local gas station, and not an indicator bulb?

Fuck them. Fuck their families. And fuck their cute little kittens with a big black dog.

And if you have to fill up on Saturday - be in early cos the queues will be really big to make up for Friday.

Or better still fill up early on Thursday so you dont have to on Saturday.

Food is ok at a gas station, makes eating less of a hassle and more time riding!

If you're in Masterton, buy Gas from the Caltex and Food from the Starmart.

It is owned by one of my nicer relatives.

You should be able to do that. It IS all downhill after all.

LOOKS LIKE SOMEONES FUCKING CAPSLOCK KEY IS BROKEN!!!

Anyway, they have the petrol. You need the petrol. You try and stick it to them and not buy their petrol to force the prices down. They have to pay money to keep a stockpile - they loose money. They need to get their money back. Prices go up - YOU LOOSE!

Trust me - capitalism works out to the best of everyone. Yes, there are some people that make more money than is ethical - but all over it's better for you!

As has been stated this wont have any effect on the oil companies. if everyone didn't buy petrol AND also didnt drive their cars/bikes for a day then it might.

Not buying petrol for a day will only hurt the poor guy who owns the Caltex/Shell/Mobil franchised station who really only makes money from selling the other products in the store( hence high prices for food/drinks etc).
Ive heard that people who own the actual stations only make about 5c out of every $20 petrol they sell for the oil company.

This won't hurt them one iota. What's the difference if you buy petrol on Thursday or Friday? Over the week they'll still sell the same amount of petrol.

What might work is trying to break the cartel. If we all boycotted one of the petrol companies until they reduced their prices, then another and so on...
