    Wow

You really have got a bee in your bonnet.

If you know that you are a good mother that is all that counts. If you are happy putting your daughter in a bikini that is great.

But there seem to be quite a few people on here that agree with my concerns so maybe I am not so wrong after all.

If worrying about the safety of young girls is such a bad thing then sue me!!

Ok. The problem I have is when I dress my little girl in a bikini its not sexual, I dont dress her in a little frilly swimsuit and think oh wow she looks sexy. If someone thinks that when they look at her, then ferk they must be some kind of weirdo, and should be castrated. (I have a seven and three year old)

I totally agree that some girls are dressed a bit too adult like. My daughter seems to like all sorts of clothes that I think are way too old for her, and have told her so. Kids should be kids, not dressed up as adults. But she doest like those clothes because it makes her feel sexy, she doesn't even comprend what sexy means, she just thinks they look good. The best thing to do with children in my opinion is to give them guidance on havening enough self-awareness that they chose clothing (talking about teenagers) that don't make them look like slappers to the out side world.

I dread the idea of ever having a "girly" girl for a child...I wouldn't know what to do, I don't think!

Having been a tomboy for the greatest part of my life, preferring jeans and T-shirts, I'd struggle with a little girl who wants to dress like Britney Spears

I have seen a few girls from my son's school (he's 10), and having known a couple of them since he was 5, I have to admit that I am often troubled by how some of these little girls are allowed to wear makeup (eye shadow and lipstick) on a daily basis, as well as skimpy clothing.

I mean, of course I wouldn't say anything to the parents, but I certainly think there is a limit to what should ben deemed acceptable for a child this age. I am pretty open minded, but I don't think makeup or short skirts are really suitable until maybe 16...

Gawd, that sounds so old fashion...

I'm no prude but am horrified at some of the "dress codes" I see on girls, even as old as 13/14 (and as young as 8 or 9). It's as if they think that looking like an 18 year old skank is something to actually strive for.
Maybe there are women out there who think Paris is on the right track? Heaven help our girls and young women!!
    I KNOW!!

and clothing stores like SUPRE don't help the fact either... their sizes are made for teeny boppers etc (or really skinny older teens but not many older teens I know of go there to get clothes) but they're not nice clothes.. they're all skimpy skimpy little skirts, t shirts and shorts etc that show off as much body as possible... these things are mostly based on what celebs like nicole richie and paris hilton wear... it's disgusting how there is actually a whole STORE dedicated to dressing girls as slutty-slut-muffins...

Its all a bit like wacko jacko and his Jesus juice and sleepovers, in a pure world it would be harmless but this aint a pure world and humans aren't perfect, some of them are just plain wired up wrong.

    G-strings

I don't know how it is in NZ but in the UK major supermarkets and some clothes stores put children's g-strings near other clothing in full view to encourage young girls to ask their parents for them.

I personally have a real issue with young girls wearing such items of underwear. Maybe I am old fashioned but I think the fashion industry and parents who buy such things for young girls have a lot to answer for.

I personally have never seen childrens G-Strings in New Zealand, I think if shops in NZ did start to sell them it wouldnt be received very well by the public. Bit like those Mr and Miss t-shirts that got pulled from JJ's.

Freedom of choice I suppose. If women don't mind being ogled by guys then thats fine I suppose. Some women like to show off what they have, not so much for the benefit of men, but to feel good about themselves. A bit like having your picture taken on a bike with your boobs hanging out, if you want to show the world an image of you like that, than so be it.

Honestly I wasnt a girly girl either, hated going clothes shopping with my mum. But I somehow gave birth to a girly girl.... not much I can about it, she loves clothes and spending ages doing her hair, all I can do is guide her towards what is acceptable for her age.

    Was waiting....

Was waiting for someone to mention my pitcure. At the end of the day I didn't think about having my pic taken on bikes when I chose the top; had I have done I would have chosen a more refined and less revealing top. But at the end of the day I am 34 and and I am not a 10 year old. I can defend myself against verbal assaults and physical assault far better than your average young girl or even adolscent girl for that matter.

There's a store at the mall in Lower Hutt called "Valleygirl".

    Most apt name ever.

I agree...forgot one option though: dressing up to look good for your hubby. I know it sounds corny, but I will generally dress well so my man thinks I look hot. Of course, other people see me in the process, but that can't be helped.

There is however a huge difference between beign sexy and being trashy...but that's just my 0.002c worth.

All the more power to you, as that would be what a loving mother would do in my view. I guess we mothers generally tend to rise to the challenge, don't we? Never really know what you're going to get with kids...but that's part of what makes it so very awesome about having them
