Not mechanivally minded has FJ1200 engine problems

    Man down

My babys gone down Boo hoo(manly Whimper)

Ridin home on my 1989 fj1200 when it started to make rattling noise in the engine and a lose power, nearly home so nursed it back....when I listened to it seems to be coming from the top of the engine around one of the valves.

next day I took off the the valve cover and checked for damage but nothing apparent, Checked valve clearance seem ok.

pulled the plugs and noticed the plug around the noisy valve is sooted and carboned while other three clean and nomal

If anyone could offer advice that would be really appreciated.

Dont have the gear fro a compression test would that be the next step......

    Gidday HOOdz,
Yep... Compression test would be next step - although from what your describing the damage has already been done

The FJ engine is a fairly robust old beast, very basically a bored XS 1100, although I do seem to recall a few of the very early "12's" taking the skirts off pistons, the reason for which absolutely escapes me at the moment

Perhaps the above will jog someones memory...

What was the oil level & condition like in the engine before it expired...

To be perfectly honest it really could be a myriad of things that have gone wrong & without being able to listen to the engine it's almost impossible to diagnose the cause...

The easiest thing to do would be to have the local Yamaha shop come pick the old girl up - don't ride it to them, & let them have a listen

Once they have given you a diagnosis you can make an educated decision from there

    Good luck

    Cheers

To finish first - first you must finish... Oh b.t.w, which way doe's Turn 1 go & whats the lap record...

No matter what the cause of the problem you are going to have to pull the head off anyway.
Why not whip it off and have a gander.
My money is on a busted valve stem

Thanks for the feeback Wheeliemonsta and Frosty, Its sounds like i'm gonna have to take the ole girl on a trailer ride to the nearest yammy dealer for a bit of a poke around.....problem is nearest dealer over 80kms away in Kaitaia never mind

p.s if there was a break in the stem would you expect it drop into the cylinder ???

the oil levels were good and I had changed the oil late December (clocked the k's in my workshop manual but too depressed to look at my bike all stripped bare) hadnt been riding much (a couple of days commuting to work with the odd weekend ride)
