    Kai in Kaikoura

I, along with a couple of workmates, will be in Kaikoura for a couple of nights in a couple of weeks.
Where are the good (not necessarily expensive) places to eat? And which places to avoid??

Have not read the replies however: Depends on what sort of thing you after - fine dining go the White Morph. There is a place opposite the main car park that is nice for more casual, and just up the road 100m is a nice thai place. There is also and ale house beside car park that has a nice restaurant too.

The Restaurant/Cafe at the Dolphin Encounter place... I always eat there. Nice food and nice views...ocean is directly across the road. Meander thru town past all the shops, you can't miss it, big place on the right.

Was there last year, sitting outside enjoying a leisurely lunch when I became aware that people were stopping and looking at something.

There was a pod of dolphins in the water straight across the road from where I was sitting. It was high tide and these dolphins were having a ball, leaping out of the water and generally putting on a show for us humans...and it was FREE!

An unforgettable half hour of my life!

If you want top food and beverages with brilliant ambiance, then Donnegal House is the best place to go in Kaikoura. Guinness and other Irish ales on tap. It's a few km out of town but well worth the trip.

Closer in, Hislops on the main road opposite the Top 10 Holiday Park takes a power of beating for great food and coffee (possibly the best coffee in the South Island).

Had lunch at Hislops today, and Hitcher is right about the coffee - it is good.
Went to Donegal House for dinner tonight. The food was OK, but that was all you could say about it, and was fuckin' expensive for what it was. The service was shit; 3 staff on who didn't have half a clue between them. I wouldn't rush back.
We are having brekky at the Dolphin Encounter place tomorrow (and probably have to do same again on Friday, as it's the only place open early enough to fit the fact that we have to catch plane home...), but it is recommended as being good. Booked in for dinner at Hislops tomorrow - spot the theme here??
