Is it actually whisky or distilled alcohol+flavouring syrup?

Probably. Any idea what percentage it is?

Have to say the best drink I ever had was home-brewed rum, at an estimated 60% alcohol. Tasted like heaven!
Who, me? I just wander from thread to thread.

Basic pot still setup about $200, but you can get a good second hand Reflux still and other equipment on Trademe. The extra price is worth it, Reflux is the way to go, much higher alcohol percentage from less work.
Look at how this auction is going: that will give you an idea of everything you need.

My mate keeps me in a constant supply of his 'Most Excellent Home Made Bourbon' - the effects of which have been witnessed on many a fun filled night on Kiwibiker.

Unfortunately I don't have a bottle up here and he's down in Marlbrough.

Just chuck a few chillis in a cheap bottle a week before you want to drink it, should be the same.

I like the John Bull kits from Hauraki homebrew (www.haurakihomebrew.co.nz - good people). I find the Black Rock kits a bit sweet and ho-hum and sweet. Use soem yeast nutrient (around a tsp) and keep the brewing temperatures down to reduce the aldehydes. I use dextrose in place of sugar, although I doubt it makes much difference.
Cider works well in kegs if you are kegging. Puts you under the table ASAP as well...
