Oil In bike going down

Hello, I have a Honda VT250 Spada, I regualary top my Oil up after about 1000kmhs just to make sure its at the rite amont. But each time i top up I have to put in about 700mls Which i think is alot of oil to top up considering the only time you should put oil in is when you do a oil change. There is no smoke at all from the mufler which is usuallly a sign of the rings being stuffed and the oil going down. But theres not a problem there on my bike, im just confused and its annoying topping it up all the time . does anyone have advice. I was told to use 20/50 oil by the dealer i brought the bike off a year ago but is it possible to try out a thicker oil so it doesnt go down so fast ???

Dude, my bike sometimes uses 1 litre in 2000kms, but according to the TRX boards I've dropped in on, not only is it normal to use that much, some TDM/TRX engines use a litre per 1000km when truly stressed, and apparently 5 valve engines use a little more oil than 4, 3, or 2 valve engines.

A "thicker" oil isn't going to do anything except use "thicker' oil at the same rate.

Do a search for a site that specialises in VT250s and see if other people have had the same experience. Find out if your oil level should be checked when warm like mine. When cold nothing shows in the sight glass as it is a dry sump engine. If I filled it to the "correct" level when cold I'd hydraulic the engine, blow seals, and generally stuff things up. See if you can get a Haynes, Clymer, or even better a Honda workshop manual. You'll often find PDFs of the workshop manual online.

How many kms has that motor done because this is weird if you don't have any leaks and no sign of smoke? I've never owned a Honda yet that needs topping up between oil changes and that includes cars.

I presume its typical Honda with a dipstick, not a sight glass. You've got to check them cold and you unscrew the dipstick and then dip it in without screwing the thread down - pull it out again check the level and if all is OK then screw it in.

Its got a sight glass, its done just over 50,000 k's now and its been like that since i brought it when it had 35,000, apart from that the bike runs perfect, starts easy without no choke and doesnt seem like anythings wrong with the motor. My dad says all motorbikes burn oil. its just strange because there is no smoke or anything coming out of the mufler at all, but it seems to get rid of the oil somehow.

Its amazing were oil will leak from and how quickly. The only way to fix it is to replace the seals and gaskets were the oil is coming out from. But it depends on available cash and if its worth doing it or getting another bike.

I have a old VF1000F, and using oil is a problem they had from new ... I just know that I have to keep an eye on the oil all the time .... I dont think using a thicker oil will help your bike any ... it will just make the oil pump have to work that much harder ... better if you are worried is to have someone look at the bike ...
