Disc lock broke my front brake !!

well... actually, I was the one who broke it!! I feel like such a moron!!! I went to ride away after work one day forgetting that on this particular day I had attached a disc lock to the brake. There was a god almighty "crunch" and my heart just sank into my stomach when I realised what I had done. I managed to get it home alright.... (while leaking fluid) but, now its well and truly munted.
I have a Kymco "Venox" 250 imported from Taiwan that I got through Christchurch city scooters. I have a picture attached.
What I want to know is.... do I have to get a new front disc brake made for this particular brand of bike??? or, can I find another more common type of disc brake that can easily be attached. I would love to get any advice about this and the name of any mechanics that might be able to service this bike as well............................ Thanks alot.

Hi...... Yeah, the disc seems fine and the rest of the brake seems alright too, ( the lever and the cables ) the speedo cable has broken off and the fluid cable must have broken off too coz, its leaked out all the fluid although, I cant really see that part. The part that my fingers are holding are just hanging off and swinging around.

Caliper will be fine, you've just sheared the mount.

Go to your dealer and order a new mount, speedo cable, and braided brake lines.

Go to an engineering firm with the broken bits you have and get them to make you a mount. I imagine Kymco spares may be a bit hard to get hold of.

Oh dear, done it many times. Never broke anything though.
Now, go to bike shop. Buy stretchy plastic coil, just $5. Use it as a reminder, one end on lock, one end looped over ignition. Very useful!

On the up-side, you can still ride your bike around, just no speedo and no front brake till you get it fixed.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I have been in touch with Christchurch city scooters and they can get me the parts I need, now I just need to find someone who can fix it.

You can do this yourself. You just need to get hold of a kindly local KBer who does this sort of stuff with their eyes closed (because they are always inebriated).

Yup.... bloody thing!! I dont even bother with it now.

One thing I have done before to help me remember i've locked the disc is to get hold of a piece of clear plastic hosing that fits over my key. Then as soon as I take the key out of the ignition the sleeve goes over it. Can't start the bike without taking it off first. Means you can still use the lock as its a good idea to have one for extra security.

Coulda been worse too, at least the sudden stop didn't cause you to drop your bike as well!

I havent used my disc lock since I did this No damage though. I now keep a spare blank key with the disc lock, which goes in the ignition as soon at the disc lock goes on the bike - havent yet used my "system",but it should remind me that I have the disc lock on.

Thank alot folks.... excellent advice. I will be implementing the plastic cord method in the future. It has been a very valuable and expensive lesson learnt the hard way!!

Hi,

I know how you feel.

I have done it twice on my Bimota and damaged the carbon front guard both times!!!
I was so so mad for being in a hurry and forgetting it was on I was kicking the walls and swearing big time!

My boss tore the front guard off a R1 doing it and he got the stretchy bright lead after that.

Have also seen the magnetic dooey that sits attched on your ignition but both times I was only moving the bike
backwards so I think the clamp on the front brake is better.
