I was lucky enough to have good mates and family overseas when I was a young fella, and they used to get sent heaps of cool music that no-one over hear had really heard of.
I remember a mate sending me some very early Metallica and Megadeath, and people where like " what the fuck is that shit" and then they started getting air time here and everyone was into them. Thats usually when I lose interest, when they become main stream.
I love the invention of the interwebs, because now we can get music from all around the world that is current.
