Funny we were talking about this on Friday night. Making Movies was their last decent album before they turned into an American Shmeltz Machine. Love over gold was dreadful Radio housewife music.

But changing the subject. My wife has wanted a Chaise Lounge since we moved in. She'd just found one a few days after HDC posted Wet Leg clip. Now not a day goes by that my wife or 11yr old daughter doesn't sing a few verses smiling and giggling.

    Thanks HDC.

And that was the problem with the 80s. Actual decent songs that made it to radio, like I dunno, Sultans of Swing or Stairway to Heaven were so overplayed that they became poison to the ear, alongside the usual dross like everything Phil Collins did after he stopped being a pretty decent drummer and started writing lyrics.

Geez student radio was the only path to non commercial cynical marketing soft pop.

Gotta say Dire Straits was part of the sound track to my yoof. Quite a few of their early songs were about moving from Newcastle to London, as I had, and all that it entailed.
I can still remember sitting on the tube with the grey people, walkman attached, listening to Tunnel of Love - "like the Spanish City to me", a slight tear welling up being alone in the big shitty.
The Spanish City was a permanent fun fair in Whitley Bay, just down the road from home.
The Knopflers came from Gosforth, a Newcastle suburb, where I ended up living for awhile. Had a super hot girlfriend then, too. Really, really naughty red head with stunning, er, attributes.

Crikey, the memories from formative years don't fade. I'm off to get some tissues and reminisce about Gosforth.

Ok that's quite funny. Was never exposed to toy dolls. You had to buy anything new here and teens only had so much money . Kinda Buzzcocks vibe.

Dunno how it's done now, but the top 10 etc used to be based on the sale of 45rpm discs. The people who bought 45s were mostly girls aged 10 to 12. That's fine while you are also aged about 10 to 12, but after a while it's quite natural that your taste may move on from what's on rotation at the hit radio stations.

Just lately I've been listening to/watching some of the a cappella groups on YouTube. One such is Home Free, they do country a cappella. Who even knew that could be a thing.

I'll post two links. The first is Home Free in their normal space. The second is more recent, about a week old, it's the two tenors from the group on their own. "Two country singers try opera."

By somewhat of a coincidence I got my kids into one of their other songs just last week. I recall banging around to this at Leeds Poly in the 80's -

And believe it or not, this song could save your life - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20008376/
