A bunch of questions about on going costs..

I did a search on KB for any info for ongoing road costs for owning a bike on here and didnt find anything, if someone has already did a thread like this or has similar info please let me know.

I'm looking at getting a litre bike (both for touring and commuting) , have done some number crunching to see if i can afford to buy one. So far so good.

However i want to know what sort of on other road costs there are to consider (aside from Wof, Rego, petrol)

I know its a very general question as there are a lot of variables factor in it, ie. depends on; bike, condition/age of bike, how you ride it, how often you ride, mileage, maintence etc. But all the same it would be good to get an average idea.

So perhaps the best way is to for some of you guys who own a big bike (Would 600cc riders pay the same as a litre bike as far as on road costs go?) if you could be bothered to run off what it costs them a year or a month to run it.

How often do you service your bike? What does it cost you for a full service?

What is the usual life-span of a chain and sprockets?

How often do you need to buy new tyres? (Ive heard its 2 rear tyres to a front) and what does it cost you?

How much would you say you spend on oil a month? and how often do you ride?

Thanks in advance to those who answered these questions (i hope they were good ones), im sure it will be good info for other buyers out there also who arent in the know. And give them a better picture of costs involved overall. It will help me work out if i can afford to keep one.

    Cheers,

I have a detailed spreadsheet listing every aspect of cost for my bike.

Unfortunately it's at work. I can post it on Monday.

To summarise it though, it costs me about $0.28 per km to run my bike, including petrol, insurance, tyres, servicing (I do my own) etc.

I get through a front and rear at the same time and usually get about 14,000 kms out of them. I tend to run Avon Storms.

I've done 50,000 kms approx on this bike in 3.5 years, and its on its fourth set of tyres, 2nd chain and sprockets (about 35,000 kms), 2nd set of brake pads (each 25,000 kms). Change the oil and filter every 5,000 kms. It gets about 16 km to the litre.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

    Interesting job then...

Actually I'm interested - can you send or post your spreadsheet. I've done similar in the past myself but dont have a copy...
