Exclamation It isn't often when I feel sorry for a cager...

But this car is (was?) owned by a young chap.
With the winds on Friday, a rather substantial branch departed company with the main part of the tree.

    Now, the extra stupid part:
One of the guys at work, a year or two ago, went around trimming these trees to prevent things like this happening.
Waitakere Shitty Council screamed blue murder and were completely over the top with threats of ramifications for this guy and the organisation.
Typical greenie, and public servant, mentality.

There was an instant "flock" of OSH nazi's on the scene yesterday and I'll bet that they will try and fine someone a shedload of $$'s for this.

In my way of thinking, if a council prevent's certain actions from happening, they are now accountable for the consequences. There is bugger-all chance of this happening in "modern NZ" though.

This guy now is looking at a written off vehicle. Luckily he wasn't sitting inside it when this happened.

    It's only a Legacy.

I feel sorry for the tree... like losing a leg. Where is it.. I want to go give the tree a hug.

if he was sitting in the vehicle he would have a really cool story to tell. and have to buy some new underwear but i doubt they would have been hurt.,

It is at my work. Not really a "public" one.

Julian & Logan were on the scene within an hour and the branch was shredded!
Probably at work's expense though. They should send the bill to WCC (seriously).

Doubt he would have been hurt if he'd been in the driver's side... And it doesn't look too badly damaged really. New windscreen, a bit of metal needs to be popped back... The engine might have been damaged though I guess.

If it was an (old) falcon, he would have pulled the chainsaw out of the boot and taken a load of firewood home. And said nothing.

Looks like a gum tree. They're buggers for randomly dropping branches. Never part under a gum. They're worse for it when they're dry (drought time).

Damn councils! I'd send the bill!! We have protection orders on trees at our place and most of them aren't even native! One of them is in danger of falling on the house and clogs up the downpipes with tiny needle pines.. Stupid councils! Send them the bill!

I thought the same, but the pillar area is quite important for crash strength. The cost of all the repair work needed would make it easier to write-off.

Pretty much, councils try very hard to minimise risk to people and property through tree management strategies, and as much as they are an ass to some people, it generally benefits the towns and people as a whole in the long run.

Gums can shed limbs, although its rare that they cause any real damage, most of the damage trees do occur shortly after someone says "Of course I know what im doing, just hold the ladder."
