    cb250

    Hi everyone
I have recently brought two 1982 cb250's one is the delux edition (from what I can tell the only difference is that it is electric start but may be more) the delux edition is unregested no wof etc. The other one i have is the kickstart version. So the problem is the one i ride (the kickstart one as it has a wof etc) 1st gear is very bad and geting worce it seems to gitter and sometimes slip into netural with more that the tinnyest bit of gas on, it stalls quite easerly in 1st too because of this. Im not a mechanic but I asume the gear is just beveled or chiped on some of the teath, open to suggestions though. I have decided to take the gear box or the box and engine off the other bike and put it in the one i ride. The problems I have come accross doing this are: Can the kickstart be put onto the electric start engine/box, has anyone here done it?
can the motor and box be seperated or do i need to move both over if they can be where is the split between the block and box?
I have never done any work on bikes before so its a bit of a learning curve for me.
Thanks for any help it will be greatly appreciated.

Those would be CB250RSs -- I love 'em, but your questions are hard, heh.

These bikes seem to do 2nd gear fairly often, my bike occasionally jumps out if I'm really giving it shit and haven't put it in gear hard enough. Only popped up recently, hopefully won't get too much worse. Haven't heard much about 1st gear problems.

Unfortunately, like most bikes, the engine and gearbox are an integral unit. So to get the gearbox out, you'll have to take off the head and piston/bore, then split the cases. Bit of a prick of a job, I'm not looking forward to doing it one day.

As for putting the kickstart on the electric motor; I have heard of it being done (electric start is notoriously shit, back in the day quite expensive to repair), the electric start has a blanked off plate where the kickstart would normally go. I don't know the details, your best bet would be to post here and ask about that, it's an English board and they've been mangling 250RSs for years.

Why do you want to put the kickstart on the electric start engine, by the way? The `gearbox' is only a few cogs and spindles, all internal parts -- putting that in won't mean new cases or changing anything else. Dunno about gearboxes, might be a worn out spring or selector shafts or drum or something. Confusing things. But at any rate the kickstarter mechanism is all off to one side and there's no difference between the gearbox in electric and kick.

What's the electric start motor like? You could simply drop that in whole if it still goes. Swap over the CDI (it's different), switchblocks etc...

What does the Deluxe need for a W.O.F?

Just swap the number plate and other necessary bits of registration over onto the other bike and ride that. Unless its in such a shit state that riding it would be dangerous.
While you sit there liking things just cos' everyone else does, I'll be standing up here keeping it real.

Hi thanks for those ideas the engine is out of the bike at the moment what is the best way to get the gears out of the box? The reason I don't just use the electric start is because the starter motor is broken. Also how could I take take the electric start off the motor? or would I have to change the housings over as well?

PM Tyger Tung he races one of these and likes pulling stuff to bits so he might give you a hand

You could turn the unregistered one into a pre 82 race bike there's 2-3 already racing
