Any Dunedin car sterio gurus out there

i have a shitty old corolla that i bought for my boys a couple of years ago that has a sterio that looses all the settings when the key has been turned off for a while apparantly there is a wire that stays live that keeps the operation going when the key is off and that isnt connected or its connected up wrong, i pulled the dash apart this aftee and had a look but its spagetty junction in there and i wasnt game to start pulling wires apart without really knowing what i was doing so is there anybody out there that can have a look that knows what they are doing and i dont mind paying a few bucks otherwise it will end up at a auto sparyks.......cheers jim

what sort of stereo does it have? I'm installing stereos for a living in auckland at the moment and can probably tell you exactly what colour wire needs to be connected to which colour cable from the stereo.

what year and model is the car and what stereo is it and i can help you out...

hi its a 92 toyota sprinter(corolla) and the sterio is a sony with a detachable face dont know model name or # the young feller i bought the car off has changed the sterio and there are heaps of wires that are taped together and everything looks ok, could it have a fault in the sterio itself?? it doesnt worry me to much but its a pain having to auto set the stations also its a tape not a cd player so i may just get a cheap cd unit put in...... what are your thoughts..... i paid a grand for the car a couple of years ago for my boys and its not worth spending to much $$ on music the little cunts can use their ipods anyway

Off hand yellow wire is to battery, red to ignition, that way presets stay set.Ours on our celica had both wires to ignition, and same problem, just worked out which wires were live, then put one on battery and one on ign,if the presets didn't stay set ,just swap wires, pain in the ass when no manual.

yep Yellow from stereo is constant power (from battery) hich i think should be connected to the black wth silver band wire on the car side of the wiring.

Red from the stereo is the accessory power.

The way to test which cable on the car side is which is to get a light tester from repco or multimeter and check which one has power on it with the keys out of the car and which one powers up when you turn the key on. The permanent one goes to yellow on the stereo, the one that comes on with the keys goes to red on the stereo.

    good luck!

    Confirmation of above

Yellow for 12V+ all the time
    Red for switched power.

Chances are they are just around the wrong way
