Hi,
What is keeping Mark in Auckland???? job? family? friends? if the answer to all these is no, then maybe a move to somewhere where there are different job opportunities and maybe cheaper rent is needed.
Why not a move to the Waikato or further south, and have a fresh start. Rent will be cheaper & maybe a fresh start could be enroling in some form of tertiary education. That way he "could" get a student allowance, get some flatmates and upskill all at the sametime.
Just an idea

Nice theory, however the Army will expect a two way relationship, ie for the life skills, trade skills, experience, semi-decent pay, mateship, respect and a supportive environment to work in, they will expect you to:
1) pull your weight;
2) do tasks/chores even when you are not asked (ie initiative);
3) respect leadership;
4) demonstrate leadership;
5) demonstrate maturity; and most of all
6) to put yourself before others when the shit hits the fan.
...are you up for it? If yes, you can expect a rewarding few (or more) years of your life. If not, then like yer mate said...you won't last a week, so don't waste everyone's time. You get out what you put in...
Good luck.
It's back..."Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

Someone explain to me why anyone would want to take in someone who's just been evicted from their flat?
In the words of the great George W:

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be quoted out of context, then used against you.
