    Lowlife scum ruining our heritage

Who the fuck would want to burn down a museum? These cunts that set fire to MOTAT are just assholes with no idea how precious our history and heritage is. If ya dont know the story then here it is....Fuckin bastards is all I want to say!

Arson is suspected in a fire that destroyed a vintage railway carriage at the Motat museum's aviation park in Western Springs late last night.
Firefighters from as far away as Papakura were called to the blaze, which also threatened to destroy a shed housing a second carriage.
Fears were also held for priceless vintage aircraft - including the world's only Solent Mark IV flying boat - kept on the site.
The shed, nearby scrub and a pile of timber caught alight.
Access to fight the fire was initially a problem and a water tanker had to be used to douse the flames.
There were fears the fire would spread to a nearby residential area.
Fire Service communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said the alarm was raised by neighbouring residents, who made many 111 calls.
Fire safety officer Ray Coleman said early today that preliminary reports suggested the fire was deliberately lit. Beer bottles were found at the scene.
Police were called to the park to track those believed responsible for the attack.

Motat's duty manager, Richard Gillet, said the destroyed carriage was awaiting restoration.
He was sickened by the possibility it had been deliberately torched, describing the collections held at the park as very important to the country.
"I'm disgusted," he said. "They are not available any longer. They are required for posterity. To see them treated like this is terrible."
The alarm was raised at 10.20pm, and the fire was brought under control at 11.30.
Rail and military collections share the Motat 2 site, between Motions Rd and Meola Rd and behind the zoo. The main Museum of Transport and Technology site is on Great North Rd.
The museum, which covers 17ha, attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year, including school groups, and relies heavily on volunteers.
In March 2000, Parliament passed a law forcing six Auckland local bodies to contribute towards its running costs, ensuring it had enough money to properly preserve the nation's transport heritage.
The park has a working railway with 1km of track, stations and a selection of former New Zealand Railways locomotives, wagons and carriages.
The nearby Sir Keith Park Memorial Aviation Collection is one of Australasia's most impressive aircraft exhibits.
Two of its most notable aircraft are the Solent flying boat and one of only a handful of World War II Avro Lancaster Bombers still in existence.
A new aviation display hall is to be built, with a planned completion date of 2010.

It was one Train Carriage, not the whole Museum.
BUT YEAH....Brainless act of destruction to a piece of our history dating back to the 1860's

Motat! That place is run down, sadly shabby.
But they have Helen Clark's stepthrough, and a fracking huge beam engine and lots of other interesting stuff.
Go see it if you haven't visited.

And young kids still LOVE the place! Mine did when we took them there a while back - and I did too, when I was a lad! The aviation exhibit was good - not shabby at all, but far too crowded with planes, and needs more cash injected, to help get some of the other old planes restored and under cover... as with the train and engine exhibits back at the main site.

Sad that some low life shits have to try and ruin it for others, just so they can get a few jollies.

The original MOTAT needs some work but the plane display at MOTAT2 is excellent. The restoration work on the Solent is amazing given what the volunteers started with, and the Lancaster is great also. I can remember viewing it with awe as a kid when it used to be parked outside the pump house at the original site.

What really bothered me last time we went was being able to show the kids the toys, phones, tools, cars, bikes, etc. I used to play with, use, ride in/on when I was a lad...!!!!

But I agree, hope they catch the sods!

Yeah, it's cool that it's fully restored too, could be returned to flying in just a couple of weeks or so apparently.

Has anyone seen a Douglas flat twin motorcycle in the vehicle exhibits? My father sent it to Motat on permanent loan shortly before he died. I've been to Motat almost every time I've been in Auckland but have never seen the bike displayed. It was rideable and didn't need restoration.
Somewhere we should have a letter from Motat acknowleging the loan, and I have a few pics of my dad and my son -, aged about 3 or 4 on it. Son is now 34 so it was sent there about 28 years ago.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

I was told it could never fly again. Something to do with something important being in two pieces rather than one.

I hope they catch the low lives that did this, but who knows how likely that endeavor will be.

Urban myth. Even believed by some staff at the museum.

The main spar was supposed to have been cut for transport but it never was. It does have a hairline crack though, so that would stop it flying safely. Engines work though, they ran them one last time before they hung it in the... um... hanger.

Or so I was told by some old dude.

I have not been to MOTAT in about 30 years. My Grandparents used to take me when I was a kid, and I no longer live in the N.I
But when I first heard the news about those bloody shits I thought what frikkin wankers they are. I am pissed off at the attitudes of some of the young generation...maybe I am just getting cynical or maybe there are a lot more asswipes around nowdays....

...Shit I am starting to sound old...

About 2 years ago there was a newspaper article about a large number of loaned or donated vintage cars that were held in storage (due to insufficient display areas at Motat). They disappeared. Speculation was that someone in the know (and with access) sold them.

The bike may well have gone the same way.??
Political correctness: a doctrine which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd from the clean end.

What a bunch of idiots. Motat is a great, cheap and really interesting place to go. The kids love it, they always see something different each time they go.

    Hope they get them!!!
