Why not to buy "OLD" new tyres....

Did a Mottott track day yesterday hoping to sort out a couple of corners for some extra pace,I brought a new Pirelli front slick SC1 off TM which turned out to be an 04 tyre.
1st session was good,managed to hold some extra pace,came in and noticed front was tearing a little so upped the rebound slightly,next session front felt good but was starting to move a little,checked when back in and it was pretty much buggered
Shaun suggested firming the front more and it felt good but tyre was f**ked by now so was moving alot.
My last front was a race take off from Nick Cole,an SC1 super corsa Pro(new version),which lasted 3 track days and was excellent.
I hadn't changed any settings so can only assume that the slick had "gone off" being old.

How old tyre is acceptable when you buy a new one from your dealer? I picked up a "new" set of Pilot Power 2ct and the DOT code suggests they are from 06. Is this considered normal?

Most Michelin tyres in New Zealand are old shit from Australia

My local H dealer had a s/corser pro on his rack which I wanted,but when I looked at it,it was an 05,asked if they'd knock some $$ off for being old stock?Got told no,couldn't be bothered arguing so just walked out.

A good way to tell if a tyre is cooked is that is has a blue tinge to it the compound is then off it will either slide easy rip to bits and we all know what happens next

On Pirelli's there's date stamp on the right side of the tyre,4 digits(month/year)or maybe week/year eg.0407.....april 2007.

On my Michelin there is a four digit number which tells you the week/year, if I've understood it correctly.

You can't blame the age, My brand new SC0 supercorsa looks like the slick in those pics too.....I've had lots of different wear characteristics from tyres at Taupo, I've had some pirelli slicks tear like that too, yet some seem ok ( all sc0 ). The dunlops ( 209gp ) and michelin ( Power race) didn't.
How's the rear? Every treaded rear I've run there ( Pirelli, dunlop and michelin ) has torn itself to bits, yet every slick survives ok ( both pirelli and dunlop ).

I agree with Death, you can't blame the age, it's not the only variable here. You're comparing two tyres of a different generation, a Dragon vs. a Diablo.

I've been using some of the Diablo race tyres and the life they've given has been incredible. I haven't used the Dragon race tyres but do recall stories of them falling to bits at Taupo track when the new bit first opened.

Never had any probs with rear,currently I've got a used old gen slick,have done 4 t/days and still has 1 or 2 days left in it,have used Corsa 3's(exc tyre),Corsa'a and Diablo's at Taupo and have never torn any.
On the front I've had Corsa's,Diablo's and an old gen Super Corsa SC1 and all have worn really well.
I noticed the tearing on this front slick after only 1 session,if only very slight,so upped the reb slightly to accomodate.
It just seems odd that out of all the Pirelli's I've used this "old" one turned to custard.
Got a new set of S/corser Pro SC1's coming (thanks DMNTD)so will see what happens.
