    Maybe you could walk it!

Then you'd only have to pay food and a place to stay, or three or four places to stay...

FOR SALE: '88 Yamaha FZX 750, low k's and decent condition. Looking for around 4.5K. Drop us a pm, view it any time. Oh, and trades considered for cruisers or naked sporties.

I was just having a wee look-see in my Motorcycle Atlas (great wee book) and started thinking that the 2nd days trip is awfully long .
I have relatives in Whangarei and might be able to crash there over night or find another cheap backpackers and then take my time on the way back to aucks. Anyone else thinking likewise or am I just being overly careful? just seems to me to be an very long distance to cram into a whole day.

i was actually considering doing exactly that. Family is from just north of whanga's, and it's an awful long way to go on my poor little ginny! Might just see how i go on the way up.
Not such a bad distance on them dirty sprotties i guess, or maybe i'm just a softcock too

Interesting. Should we do it a two day or a three day tour ?

Badger8 and ChocolateWheels as you guys point out, it is a long days riding.

So Who prefers TWO DAY TOUR and who prefers THREE DAY TOUR ?

I'm keen for three, that way we can do stuff like visit the big tree and have tons of breaks overlooking scenic... things.

I agree it's a long trip. Especially for people not used to long distances. You could be looking at 8 hour days will lead to fatigue which can be dodgy.

Thought about making it 3 days and packing in more twisties TOTO? Say as an example...

Day 1 - Up to Opononi for a nice warm up - 287km (4h 44m) googlemap. Waipoua is mega twisty so low km won't be a problem.

Day 2 - Opononi to the cape then back to Kawakawa - 446km (6h 1m) googlemap

    Day 3 - Kawakawa to town via Woodcocks, Old North and Riverhead-Coatsville - 265km (4h 56m) googlemap

Only 287k for the first day ? Too short for me. We can definately make it to kaitaia in one day - no sweat.
Following the oridinal route if we could have a rest at whangarei for a night, and then third day do woodcocks and back home. Thank for your input Disco.

Who is Keen for THREE DAY tour instead of TWO DAY TOUR?

I'll do the three day tour, we could just have a few drinks or whatnot on the second night and just have a proper muck around in Whangarei.

Chocolate and Badger, you mentioned you had relatives there. They don't have a garage or something we can all crash in perhaps? i don't think us bikers need nothing fancy, but it'd cut down costs and effort of finding a second place to stay.

[EDIT]But err.. come to think of. I need to be back in Auckland by Sunday afternoon or evening. So if we left on the Friday i'd be keen. If not I may just pull out altogether.

I'm treating the girlfriend to a couple of nights stay at Kai Iwi Lakes starting Sunday evening and I reckon she'd murder me if I cut it a night short..

The three day tour sounds like the biz-niss! Makes more time to enjoy the journey, see the sights along the way, and have a good time in the evenings. Also some of us aint on the most comfy bikes

Have just had a chat to the parents, apparently they're outta town for easter weekend, and weren't too keen on a bunch of bikers trashin the place i'll see what i can pull, but there may not even be a bed for me there on the sat night

Also, wouldn't recommend Kawakawa as a night stopover, not much to the township. Somewhere like Kerikeri might be the better option
Not sure about Opononi, havent been out that way in years

Google times are pretty good guides if you factor in gas stops etc. You ridden that route? You'll spend at 30-40mins covering about 30km through Waipoua alone. Maybe more if you get held up by campervans.

I know *you* can make it mate. Easy peasy as you've been doing lots of long rides. It's others who aren't used to long days I'm worried about binning when they get tired.

The route looks great, but i would recommend Kaitaia for the first night stop, and Kerikeri for the second. Spreads the miles a bit better, and means we're staying in slightly bigger towns (big is relative in the far north ). Makes it much easier (and cheaper usually) to find a decent feed and reasonable accomodation for cheap (again, reasonable is relative). Could always throw on the tent if someone wants to get cozy
