    I prefer kite fishing...

I have a hosereel drum with a ratchet - with about 2km of fishing line on it.

...rig up about 50 traces from the main line, some with baited hooks and others with lure-plastic-flashy-things.

Takes about 20 minutes for the kite to take the whole thing out to sea... then just start winding it back in. Everytime I have done it I always get a few fish on it. Once I got a shark.. but 'let go' of the fish that was hooked leaving just it's head when it reached the shore...

Only problem is you need a day when the wind is offshore...

Hmmmm ....... you can do anything as long as you don't get caught

Seriously can't remember, people do camp overnight, some also tend to be carrying guns.
You also need to keep aware of Army training operations and Airforce bombing runs during which public access is not allowed.

Walked back to the car one trip to find guys loading a chopper which had landed right alongside the car (no camera phone back then).

If you have a 4wd that you don't mind getn rusty then driving up Muriwai beach will let you fish close to the same area for less effort.

Err that would be roughly 2x the max limit of hooks per longline (25)

Sweet, if you purchased the Kite rig then its prolly got 25 but would certainly pay to check, reasonably stiff penalties and they are enforced. I love kite fishing cause it keeps you pretty busy and its quite effective. Had good results off Kareotahi and Ruakaka. Shame you didnt get the shark in mate, fresh they are fantastic to eat, dont keep so well but.
