I just read this in the NZ Herald and I'm deeply shocked. I feel so sorry for the families and friends of these two especially Phillip Harrison who left a 9 year old son. Derek Hill also left an 18 month old son who will never know his dad.

I know this could have happened at any track but the reputation of Pukekhoe preceeds it..... How many more lives will this track take before it is closed ? This is a tragic and very sad event.

Most sincere condolences to the family...

We are all riders, and so we all care.

RIP riding brothers, may you ride free again...

    ...........

    RIP Riders
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

Having read the reports - I agree and have amended my post. The point still stands that Pukie is an extremely dangerous track for bike racing.

Tragic losses. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and close friends of both riders. Derek, was a good dude always friendly to the ladies tagging along behind partners in the pitts and always a smile on his dial.

    RIP

Can only concur. I never knew the riders personally but seeing the number of posters who did and reading their comments makes the tragedy more "real", I guess.

We hear of motor vehicle accidents every day, and depending on the circumstances, we may think the victim deserved his end, or usually we remain relatively unaffected because we didn't know them, but everyone has family and friends who are affected.

While we all agree that racing is not a "safe" sport, it is obvious here that these were good people and good riders. This seems to fall genuinely into the "accident" category and not due to recklessness on either racer's part, so my sympathies and condolences are for all affected by this tragedy.
