    I got Mooned!!!

I was heading out the door early this morning and was greeted by this, which I thought was a pretty amazing sight.

Apparently it is Venus close to the moon and Mercury can be seen faintly directly above and slightly to the left.

You're not fooling anyone, we have got you figured out. You're just trying to lure us into showing weakness and then you'll laugh at us. Which hurts!

    I would never...

However, just as well you can't hear me from where you are!

    Wow, that's mega cool.

What's going on there, some sort of gravitational lensing effect?

Or is it just an optical illusion from the proximity, and Venus is always that size in the sky?

I dun no much about this 'astro fizzix' stuff.

Venus is usually the first visible "astral body" in the evening, and the last one visible in the morning. (Apart from the moon and sun, of course).
It's just that at the moment, Mercury and Venus are sharing the same patch of sky. You can also see them in the east at twilight.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Nah, nothing in this solar system would qualify for gravitational lensing.

We're talking *very* distant light sources and extremely massive objects (galaxies and black holes) to achieve that.

    I didn't think so.

But, you know, no such thing as a dumb question, etc.
