I am Legend - Alternative ending released

An alternative ending was released with the DVD version a few days ago. This was the "original" ending, but the producers didn't think it would appeal to the American demographic. Something about it being too intellectual for the average movie goer.

Or if you can't be arsed watching it, here's a summary.

The tone of the ending of the film was altered dramatically before the film's release, with the majority of the changes made to the standoff between Neville and the infected in his laboratory. Visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs recounts the original ending starting with the standoff: "At that point, Neville's—and the audience's—assumptions about the nature of these creatures are shown to be incorrect. We see that they have actually retained some of their humanity. There is a very important moment between the alpha male and Neville." David Schaub stated, "Then, when Neville finally turns the alpha female over to the alpha male, there is this little love moment between the two of them." The infected then retrieve the captured female and spare Neville's life. The original final shot follows Neville, Anna, and Ethan as they cross the remnants of the George Washington Bridge in hopes of finding other survivors.[33] This ending will be used for an alternate cut of the film in the DVD release.[34]

I think that this ending is far more respectful to the concept created in the books. The release version was the equivalent of remaking the movie Titanic and having the boat reach New York. They spent the entire movie building up all these characters and a thought provoking plot, only to throw it all away in a flash of americanesque retardism, redneck appealing, martyrdom wank-bravado.

This is why I hate American remakes of cult classics.

    Rant over.

I like both the endings, I probably slightly prefer the movie release ending, it was way sadder. I also liked that the original ending showed that the research community did exist.
Unfortunately, I hadn't read the original story so not sure how the movie varied but nonetheless, a good watch.
    Thanks for posting that.

I loved the movie, right until the ending. I HATED that ending. Can't watch the alternative because I'm at work, but will see it when I get home. Sounds much better.

The movie still misses the essential heart of the book's plot, even with the new ending. The growing self-realisation that Neville is a psychotic, murdering, genocidal lunatic, a feral rogue predator, a figure of legend - for the poor bastards he's murdering. In the movie he's portrayed as a good man in a bad situation. The reality is a lot different.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?

Same. I was astounded that i'd watched 99% of a movie that had total awesomeness (forgiving some of the dodgy GFX) then along comes this 1% at the end that manages to ruin it the whole thing.

    Indeed.

Even up to the last minutes, I was expecting an ending something like the new 'alternate' one, and just rolled my eyes in disgust when the originally-released one played.

that makes three of us... fully expected the incredible hulk to realise that she'd been 'saved' and act accordingly.

You can see earlier in the movie that the dude was 'in love' or atleast held some kind of affection towards the female when she was taken.

In the book he got sucked in and betrayed by a chick from an infected settlement who had learned to partially block the infection. The movie had no balls at all.
