    Small bore Motard?

Motard racing looks like a heap of fun and I am keen to have a go. I am a tight arse so would like to have a go on the machinery I have now, then if I decide to take it further go and spend the money.

Currently I have a 2000 CR125. Great reliable and fun little 2 smoker, that I have owned for 4 or 5 years now. Thought about selling it and changing, but its probably only worth $2000 so hardly worth it for the amount of fun that can be had on it (hell you pay that for a pit bike!). It is ported and polished, carbon reeds, full fmf exhaust and is set up to run 100% avgas permanently.

Has anyone done a small bore motard?
Is there a class for it?

I'm sure I saw a guy running a KX125 at Paeroa a couple of years ago?

I am going to book myself on the MotoTT track day for the 4th April, and thought this would be a good time to throw some road tyres on the CR, harden the suspenion, chuck on a higher gearing and take the bike out for a play, just to see how it goes.

Look forward to grabing some feedback on this idea.

    Cheers
    Tony

hey Tony, you would have a heap of fun dude but to be honet, the 125 wouldnt be competitive again the bigger bikes, so you would probabley running a lonely race at the back and that aint no fun!

maybe keep the 125 for mucking around offroad and look at buying a bigger ready to race motard (check out tardme at the mo, a few there that have could my eye). motarding looks like cheap and fun racing. Its got me thinking myself...

you can do it if you are really keen, you can use std rims to svae money if you just want to play at a track day,

you will need the biggest front sporcket you can fit on and the smallist rear, (prob something like 15-38 gearing,

as for racing, you will be up against it bigtime, horsepower is king,

I had a KX80 and that was a blast. Though I was 14 so it fit me at the time.

The 125 will be great fun to get started. Don't spend too much on it though, just get some tyres to suit the rims you have. You'll be keen on upgrading soon enough.

I dont expect to be competitive on it for sure and wouldnt sink a hell of a lot of money into it. It would be more for shits and giggles really. Dont they race those rgv150's and the like? Can I put the 125 against those guys or do they run a motard only class?

Is a CR125 still a Honda MX Bike??? If by rg150's you mean buckets your bike won't be eligible as it's competition based. If you want to Motard it what sort of track do you mean. If you mean Kart tracks I would say have a go but start at the back unless you want to annoy people. Kart tracks are great levelers and sometimes a small bike is a surprise. Best thing would be to go to a track and talk to the locals. If you mean Road Race circuits - mmmm not really a class for you. I did it in the 70's on a kitted TM125, you need to gear a 125 for about 160k + and it makes for a huge first gear. Your MX gearing is difficult to get the right power spread. I found I could corner better than most road bikes but everything goes by you on the straights. Sell it and get something more suitable I think.

i sold my cr125 02 model about 4 months ago, for $3000. i wouldn't mind having a blast at motarding as well. but 450 is the only answer.
my 125 would do 108kph standard gearing and im sure it would be hard work to get more speed out of the little bike with out fairings. maybe i have too book in for a tack day as well. take along the 250

I was watchin the world supermoto champs and a guy won the lites class on a kx125! he was haulin! On a go kart track like they race on in europe alot of the time the 125 would be sweet and you would prob smoke half the motard riders on there big bikes but on like taupo puke etc you will get smoked with the long straights but if fun is what its all about go see scotty at MR Motorcycles for some street tyres to fit you standard wheels maybe an oversized disc and your away!

Does anyone know if there are any go kart tracks that let motard bikes on?

Now thats what I'm talking about! There is obviously no lites class here in NZ. And do the motards here only race on tarmac and not a 50/50 track like overseas? and one with jumps on it too?

Maybe a small bore motard club at the local kart track might be an answer?
