Anyone else attend the open day at Ohakea air base yesterday? We went along - and were stunned that about 30,000 others also turned up! It was a great day with some amazing displays put on both on the ground and in the air. They had heaps of cop bikes there - many in pretty poor condition as they had been binned by trainees!
The star of the show was the Australian F1-11 that was absolutely incredible to hear and see. This is a shot of it over the base as the fuel it was dumping ignited. Man, do I wish I could have scored a flight in that!
I just wish I'd taken the 'real' camera instead of the compact as the F1-11 moved so fast it was hard to get in the shot as the reflections off the screen were so bright.
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
Coming home yesterday from Taupo, saw this guy flying overhead upside down, so we just had to stop and was rewarded by him doing the flyover/ignite as in your picture.
Was absolutely fantastic
Pity about all the traffic - back roads were taken instead of Sh1 home...

Takes me back to days as a boy living in Palmmy. Nothing like that of cause, Skyhawks were the big deal back then. I remember a Starlifter landing there as did a Vulcan? (no not Spock) Greatest memory of the Skyhawks was a Mock attack on the Clock Tower in the Square, scared the shit out of me as i recall, wouldn't now though

Did you pull in at the weigh station? We had been at the open day but figured we'd get a head start on the mad panic to get out when it finished and leave about half an hour early - so we parked at the weigh station and watched the finale. Those jets are beautiful!

Was a good day, the plane with the flame job was a bit of gear, definatly didn't have the standard engine and had a bit of grunt, the ThunderMustang was cool, 3/4 sized replica.
It can go like a cut cat as well! Talk to the crew as they will do observer flights sitting behind the pilot.
The cockpit is almost as high tech as an airliner. Glass cockpit instrumentation galore!

And being a 3/4 scale made out of alluminium and composites and its modern engine it's actually got better flight characteristics than the original in most flight roles.
It actually looks kinda small when next to the real thing though, but in the air they do complement each other quite nicely!

The wing is slightly smaller than 3/4 scale, while the fuselage is 3/4.
Have a look at the website. Good writeup by the test pilot.
It is hangared around the corner from the Warbird's P-51. An interesting ramp area!!!

No didn't pull in at the weigh station, just found a spot before it on the side of the road and watched for 10 mins or so, then had to get going again...
Was worth the stop to watch though..
