You have to remember that they have parachutes and can be reused. So you get to use them multiple times.
And its seriously fun time - I do it with my son and we enjoy the time together. We are only on our second rocket (lost the 1st), but already we are eyeing up the bigger ones......mahwhahahaha
Reactor Online. Sensors Online. Weapons Online. All Systems Nominal.
You can get the small kits from hobby city - they are cheap and fun, but still go a VERY long way VERY fast.
Bigger ones can be got from rockets.co.nz - possibly the worlds worst website. or from the US. Im guessing engines will need to be purchased from NZ as shipping them would be problematic.
I do a rocketry course at school where I teach, also use October Sky as a year 9 visual text and combine it with practical elements.
The B class rocket motors will launch a small rocket 1000-1500ft into the sky no problem at a staggering rate of knots. When I launch, have to watch the local airspace as they can go high enough to hit low flying planes!
The kids love watching the launch with the smoke and noise and then they all crane their heads to watch it accelerate away! When the parachute pop out on the kevlar string and wafts down to earth, you can see their smiles widen!
Bloody good fun is rocketry... I got the set up for several rockets and the handcontroller/launch pad etc for launching them!
And yes, I do so want to launch rockets that can go further!![]()

There was a guy in the paper recently who was building a rocket to break the NZ (and I think, the world) height records. His first attempt went OK, but the GPS carked it so he didn't retrieve it to verify the altitude achieved. I worked with a guy in Chch who belonged to the rocket club there, but they were smaller ones that were nowhere near as big as the ones pictured.
... and that's what I think.
Or summat.
Or maybe not...
Dunno really....![]()
If you have the targeting package, I'll go and get the co-ordinates for the beehive...
Hello to all the law enforcement community tuning in to this post![]()

Taupiri, (just sth of Huntly) is a recognised launch zone.
Must pop up there one day on a club launch day.
I made up some propellant using KNO3 and Icing sugar. Worked real good. Found some clay for nozzles from the local welldriller. Laminate/roll tubes out of paper.
Good fun. Haven't done any high altitude stuff yet.
