    Wellington -> Tauranga...

We obviously had the weather gods with us this morning on our final day of the tour.

We got back to Her_B4's place around 12.30a.m. after Rock2Wgtn and woke up again about 7.45a.m to start packing up to go home. They were kind enough to provide a delicious cooked breakfast to line our tummies before we hit the road just before 10a.m.

The traffic leaving Wellington was heavy and there were shitloads of slow vehicles holding everyone up and not pulling over. We cruised straight up SH1 at about 115kph (ish) as we had all day to get home. We fueled up in Bulls with the intention of refueling in Taupo.

There were loads of bikes out and about and it was such a primo day for it. I didn't know how my back was going to last being on the bike for that period so I was pleased that it only got tender once we entered Taupo. I was stoked with the RSVR's economy - its fuel light came on at 220KM and then it only took 12.5L (18L tank) when we filled it.

Leaving Taupo put us on familiar roads so we continued up SH1 to Tokoroa, Putaruru, and then over the Kaimais and home. It's hard to keep the speed down when you're on the home straight, so I deliberately sat behind a car doing about 112kph. The trip was riddled with patrol cars (12, plus 2 speed cameras) and I didn't want to contribute to their revenue collection!

We had stunning weather the whole way, except the Kaimais were a bit damp and overcast. We got home safely at 4.15p.m. so it took about 5.5hrs to ride from Wellington to Tauranga.

Excellent stuff. Having just done a quick lap around 3/4 of the south island I can relate well to many of your discriptions - especially that of the road works between blenhiem and nelson. That hill you speak of is brilliant!

great write up - wish I could spend that amount of time on tour.

I'll do it again at some point just not at the end of financial year!

haha yeah you're right! We're yet to get our fuel bill (we used a Mobil card) so it'll be interesting to tally up how much the trip actually cost us. Cajun keeps every fuel receipt so we should be able to compare the RSVR's economy to the 600's.

Awesome reading Motogirl... I'm impressed you managed to writeup and remember so much along the way!
Glad you all enjoyed yourselves, its nice to see newbies to the south island really getting to see so much of it. Most people just do a quickie!
So what do you judge as being the best part? (tho I know you sound like you enjoyed the whole lot really)

    Good stuff. Adele!

Made me somewhat homesick (although I only lived in the Sarf Oilund for a couple of years, we've had a few holidays there before/since...)

Must do another trip again soon. Mebbe on bikes this time.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

The absolute best part was the day we rode from Dunedin to Haast. The weather was brilliant and the scenery going round those lakes was staggering!

My notes about you are for a different thread Nah, I decided to keep a diary so I wouldn't forget the places we saw, and also so I'd be able to identify the places in the photos. Yeah, yeah, I'm a nerd!
