Ya Damn Right I Got The Blues.

Well, not so much me as Buddy Guy.
For close on fifteen years I've been wanting to see the man Eric Clapton calls "The greatist guitarist alive". And Blues Fest 08 at Whitianga gave me a sample of his incredible abilities with guitar.
And for his ability to play with the crowd. Wow.

My next wish is to see him in a full concert, as 1 1/2 hrs just leaves you wanting more. (a long set as it was).
KT Tunstal is a ball of female fun loving energy, and gives her all on stage.

Which is more than can be said for Ian Brown, (the clown).
I don't know which UK football club this plonker started singing at, but best he crawls back to it. Bottom line, he was told by most of the crowd to piss off stage, and that he was shit. Pretty much only the drunks thought he was cool. He couldn't carry a tune in a wheel barrow.

Midge Marsden did his usual high standard set, as did some new artist's( to me at least), Little Bushman out of Welly I think, and Xavia Rudd from OZ.
And not to forget Keb Mo out of the US. Awsome Blues artist.
Herbs, and Hollie Smith rounded out the main stage acts, and as I didn't visit the minor stage, then I'll leave that be.

Pic's are average, as I just couldn't be bothered.

Yeah, Ian Brown is about 5 years past his "best before" date. Corker of an act when he's on form though.

Looked a damn good event, weather as usual primo, but alas lack of $$$,good to see Midge playing as well as ever by sounds of it.Saw the Clapton bio on prime a couple of weeks ago,he had definate fondness for the blues played by BB King,Buddy Guy and others.K T Tunstill is damn fine too, shame not much time for the bands to show their stuff, especially the main acts,a couple of hours each would've been good, time contraints are a bugger.

Keb Mo would be one to tune into for clean blues.
Xavia Rudd isn't blues. More a cross of John Butler Trio, with a dash of Paul Simon, (Simon n Garfunkle). Awsome percussion/beats with Dave Tolly out of Toronto.
And never pass up Midge Marsden. Underated in NZ, but world class Blues singer.

John Lee Hooker is as good as any.Even for modern blues/rock try George Thorogood,Joe Walshe,Eric Clapton late 60-early-mid70s.Midge has a new album due soon, also some of the guys he has on his albums are world class NZ musos,Midge and Bullfrog Rata with Syd and Freddy Limbert(sp).

I'm also a fan of Ian Moss, (cold chisel guitarist).
His CD "Petrol Head" has some excellent riffs, and also a chracter named Dave Hole, although he has a more structured style.
I guess blues has such a wide style, that it's hard to pigeon hole it into one box that suits everyone.
Clapton, B Guy, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters etc have what many would call classic delta blues, but the new breed like Keb Mo guarantee that the blues will remain strong. Find a style that fits your life, pour ya favourite poison, and soak both of them up.

As they say blues aint blues, depends on ya take,so many variants,i.e Dr.John,Muddy Guy to Clapton and onto Thorogood even Springsteen had a go.As you say find your genre, all blues is good.Even Creddence Clearwater Revival do more blues/swamp blues type and Tony Joe Whyte, more swampish.

I've met Buddy Guy. Really nice dude. Took the time aside from signing some tax forms to come say howdy to me when I stopped by one of his places in Chicago.

Yep, fantastic event. My favs' were Midge (of course), really enjoyed the Herbs unplugged set (reminded me of a protest march I was in in Tahiti just before the last ever test in the Pacific), Xavier Rudd (holy cow what a talented musician), Darcy Perry Band (hot as always), Kt Tunsdall, The Bushman Trio, Buddy Guy (who is the man I originally wanted to see), The Checks (for some good ol' rock n roll), Hollie Smith (what a groovy sexy sound she had).
