I think the hard drive is the way to go, much easier than building a 2nd computer, or buying an old laptop just to watch movies on.

That way I can also trtansport all my MP3's etc to mates places with me, so I never have to listen to Nickelback at a party again!

If you avoid iPods you will find many music players when plugged in show up like regular storage devices without any fiddling around. Perhaps if you were extra crafty you could get yourself a music player in the process.
