Visor problem!! Any Ideas?

I have a HJC helmet and it is a good fitting helmet .Only one thing wrong with it, and that is the visor.

On a stinking hot day, and I want the visor on maybe one or two clicks, to let a bit of air in. The bloody useless thing slams shut above 80kph.

And just the same riding in rain, or a cooler morning when you want it open to clear the fog from the screen or that annoying condensation that builds.

I have had the lid for a couple of years now. So I treated it a new fog free visor.

Just the same, the visor won't stay up. Only in the wide open position. And as for the fog free. Well it's a load of bull shit.

Any Ideas how to keep it open on the lower end of the clicks anyone?

Some years ago I was racing Superkarts and used to experience the same problem when it rained. Ended up taping a little piece of small diameter plastic tubing to keep it open. Looked a little bit naff but did the trick.

I've got an HJC, and had a breathguard for it, seems to work wonders for the fogging up, but unsure of what you can do with it shutting on you...

Doesn't it have the adjuster screws on the side to tighten the visor up?

My Wife has an HJC and I don't like it. As you say, the tilt notches are in the wrong place. The visor on my cheapo FFM is much easier to use - great around town open just one click. Never had it slam shut, at any speed.

The anti-fog coating is bogus. Take the visor off and wet it under the warm tap, then soap it up bigtime inside and out with dishdrops until it's clean clean clean and then dry it with a chamois or clean tea towel. Coat it with Turtlewax Ice inside and out and buff to a shine. Keep a tiny bottle of water+dishdrops and a little cloth in your jacket pocket and keep the visor clean. Re-Ice regularly.

Whenever I'm on a trip everyone raids my wash bottle.

If you have a look at your helmet side on where the visor mechanism sits, perhaps it has just worn down over time?

The question you have to ask yourself, has this happened when you first bought your helmet?

From my experience cheaper helmets have the tendency to 'snap' shut when you have them open and travelling at a high speed.

But helmet designs are getting really good these days quite a few brands like Shark these days offer a locking mechanism like a 'tab' that sits near the visor mechanism whicn enables you to lock the visor open.

As for fog proofing your visor, you can't go past the whole 'fog city' range of inserts which is sits on the inside of your helmet and creates a 'double glazing' effect.

I haven't used an anti-fog visor but I can agree with DB that a lot of the AF-visor stuff that's on the market doesn't live up to it's name.

Not here to slob off any potential buyers but be completely sure that it works when you're dishing out a good hundy.

There's a crap load of anti-fog stuff on the market, you can even try those anti-fog spray for swimming goggles. The key is really keeping your visor clean on the inside like DB mentioned and re-apply a thin layer of whatever when it's necessary.

Smearing a thin layer of dish washing liquid on the inside also works.

Usually you'll find that if you open your visor one click/at it's lowest opening while you're riding around in the rain it should be sufficient enough to get rid of the fog, it only gets you when you're stationary/at the lights.

You're lucky. I'm starting to get visor-creep and it begins to open around 100km not close! I use either the Hein Gericke anti-fog spray I brought from the UK which lasts about 4-5 days, or just rub some washing up liquid on and dry off - lasts a few weeks!

its nearly three times the price of the FFM.

A HUNDRED BUCKS for some anti-fog solution is just thievery, unless I am seriously missing something. Sure, my visor fogs when I huff on the inside of it, but it clears between breaths.

Simple... Buy an Arai

I dumped my HJC when the visor kept flying wide open when I did life savers.
Is $350 cheap? If it fits better than an Arai, it'll do a better job, so money isn't really the issue. You pay for less noise, better venting, removable liners etc, but the fit is #1 criteria if you want to save your head.
Also, I can vouch for Fog City inserts in UK winter, rainy, early morning commutes. Couldn't feel my fingertips, but could see.

Had the same problem with my old HJC. The locking mechanism got worn over time. What I discoverred was that when closing the visor it pulled forward and draged the visor roundy pin thin forward in the locking mechanism so that it wasn;t correctly "seated".

So what i would do before putttin it on each time is check it and just push it towards the rear of the helmit and it would ratchet properly until closed again.

Sometimes I could push it backwards to get it to seat properly while riding but not always.
