Try MX boots. They have big adjustable clips. Plus they look chunky and tough. People will think you're a kickarse MX rider too, just riding your road-bike on your days away from the trails.

They protect the foot, ankle and lower leg excellently, and can strap down to tight fit or loosen out to go over trousers & storm pants or even my chunky Nordic 4 pants. I have chunky legs too, and couldn't get into most boots - and no non-mx boots when I tried to get trousers underneath.
On the downside they are not great for the track (if you wanted) as they're not designed for scraping.
