Last night we saw the 50ccGP trophy, last won in 1980 by Bob Toomey
What a fantastic bit of history, and to think it's all go again on the 7th.
Bob Toomey was quite famous, as a rider and then later in top world GP teams. Can anyone fill in a bit of detail here? It would be interesting
Thanks, and hope to see plenty of bikes there (I'm prepping 5!)
Be good to see a decent field. I wonder how many genuine GP bikes will turn up?
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
I wonder if he really was the last person to win it though?
About 1982 they ran a street race in Sydenham and the NZGP was contested at that meeting and they did run a 50cc class, I'll try and find the program again
Unfortunately due to problems with my other bike I will no longer have time to sort out the 50cc bike I had to ride![]()
Yeah, I love the wee 50's. When I started racing, it was 22 years ago, in Dunedin and 50's were all the rage then. When my oldest boy, Dom began riding it was a hotted up Yamaha RD50. When I gave him a YB100 he said the torque and power spoiled him so he gave it back! He was determined to beat the "senior" buckets on the 50 and usually did. He developed a "tucked in, small as I can be" riding style which he still has today, even with 200hp under him!
Roll on the 50's. I can't wait
How did the 50's go? Does anyone have any photos, or is it coming on the telly?
The Telly? Sadly no.
Though it may be mentioned in KR if Dave gets his feature published. There were more photos taken of the 50GP than the BOB as it was dry as opposed to pouring.
To be honest we didn't get a huge amount of old GP eligible bikes (ie: not just F5 buckets), but there was a good turn out. Hopefully next year other bikes will be pulled out of sheds etc.
Here's my report on the race.
