Getting a package from Auckland to Christchurch

I was wondering if anyone had a good idea about how to get a package from Auckland to Christchurch as cheap as possible.

It's light but bulky:

600 mm x 600 mm x 1000 mm - approximately.
8-15 kgs tops.

So far I've only been quoted ridiculous amounts by courier companies - ridiculous as in it would be cheaper to get a couple of plane tickets, rent a car and go up and get it down on a plane myself.

Any help and ideas would be appreciated!

So far I've heard from:

Courierpost.
Mainfreight.
Peter Baker Transport.
Roadstar.

And either it's too expensive or they don't wanna deal with such petty loads.

Have you tried NZ Post?

I have looked at NZ post. But they won't do anything larger than 0.125 m^3

Am thinking about alternative packaging...

I can take it from Auckland to Wellington if it's ready by Thursday.

That's a very nice offer. I don't see why the package couldn't be ready by thursday

It won't do much good unless we manage to get something organised for the rest of the trip though... it'll still be inter-island transport.

It's important to note that time is not really an issue as well.

It's probably a bit large for Courier Post, shame because they are really cheap. I used a furniture removal company to get an old seat down from New Plymouth, it was worth ringing around. Not being in a hurry helped - took two weeks but only cost about $90 which I thought was pretty reasonable. Try Mana Transport, or DHL - could be good for their beer money xmas fund

... and that takes nearly a month to deliver packages across town via "Track and Trace".

Yeah, they could do it and they are usually good. Only problem is that I've been quoted $270 and the goods I'm shipping are $300... A bit over the top really.

It says that you can get a parcel with dimensions
Maximum size of parcel:
Length = 1.05m
Length + girth = 2.5m
Volume:
Length x width x height = 0.125m³ across the island for one ticket per 5 kg, which is $12.50 x 2 = $25.00 (for 10kg).

Isn't that big enough for the parcel?

I'd take it in and see if they will take it over the counter; sometimes talking to a human can get you a bit further. Good luck~

Even if they would accept the package being oversize it would still be somewhere between $150 and $190 to get it from one island to the other...

It's well and truly grotesque what they are charging for volumetric weight. The package will weigh less than 15 kgs. The volume is going to be approximately 0.360 m^3.

But I must say that in my experience there's no business that is more opaque and impossible to make sense off than the freight forwarding business!

Try Efficient Carrying Co in Otahuhu,or Fliway as well,usually any furniture carrier should be able to do for you.
