Yeah i'll reckon that'll do the job.

@Discotex, you've never done the Coro loop...? You're gonna love it haha.

@Choco, an extra 50km's is nothing and I don't think anyone would object to doing 50k's, I think. But I reckon we should stick with staying in Whakatane for both nights for conveniences sake. Like, I'm hoping this place Tod has picked out is a good place to stay cause if we have to go from a great place to a place like the one in Whangarei again I won't be happy.. honestly, you just wanted to hit that old dude.

And normally i'd agree with doing a different route but i've done the route you're Dad has suggested. It's boring.. Paeroa is just scary (there's L+P flags, signs, billboards.. it's everywhere!) It's a pretty straight line unfortunately. And I never consider going back the same way as the same route.. the difference between an uphill decreasing radius lefthand corner and a downhill opening right hand corner are imense and unless you're there to look at the trees, it's gonna be a completely different ride each way. This is my opinion and everyone else should have their say aswell.

You're Dad's a smart man! I'm just a negative bugger who don't like change.. unless it's impromptu on the day

And good to see you guys expressing interest again! It was great to ride with you last time, and will be to do so again. I wonder where the West Cape is...?

[Edit] And to Renegade, i'll make an effort of doing that for yah. I just sorted out my new speedo cable this afternoon I can tell how fast i'm going now! Damn.. time to slow down.. Now for that damn battery..

I had a mother come up to me as I was leving work with her toddler, telling the kid to watch me start my bike and drive away.. having to push start it was just embarrasing...

Can't hurt to have another opinion out there and from past experience parents always have this creepy way of being correct...

Interesting to see you say it's boring; old man told me they were good roads and that the gorge was a pretty nice ride and my wee Motorcycle Atlas agrees .

    Anyone else done this route?

Now, the Gorge is absolutely amazing! Albeit only about 10 minutes long and usually with traffic. But it is definately a sight to see, but you see.. the route is mainly down state highway (2... I think) and it's very straight, cause the Gorge is just after Waihi, and Waihi is where you turn off to do the reverse Coro loop. If people were knackered by that time I would recommend they do the Gorge and just make it home in about an hour and half, but they'll be home before 12am.. that's what's good about the Coro loop. It's a healthy 6 hours more of riding

All up to how people feel on the day, as I said I like impromptu on the spot change. We're not gonna follow that exact route when we get down to it, we never do.. Just good to have an initial plan and work it out more when we get to it.

True and anyway, on the spot changes are much more fun!

But it just seems a bit of a shame that we use up 2 days of a long weekend doing the same loop twice, which can be done in a single day anyway.
Why not use routes that we wouldn't usually be able to do (because of distance/time restraints etc) and do a normal weekend 2-day standard-then-reversed corro loop another time?

Just an idea, but either way we still get an epic three day ride so MEH!

Oh just a quick note: that extra 50km between Whakatane and Opotiki turns into 100km because we have to do it twice: so thats another hour of riding added to an already long day

Nagash ir right. The gorge is breath taking and absolutely fantastic - but its only 10 - 15 min of it and stuck in traffic sux coz cars slow right down too. the rest of it is boring straight , we did it a month ago with gtr boy and nagash, so amm yea I think at this stage orifinal route is good.

The second day riding from whakatane to whakatane is 560km. easyly doable in a day - even on such a curvy route. if we allow ourselfs 12 hours of chilled out riding with plenty of stops we will be sweet. I'm thinking 7am till 7pm. 12 hours is enough for 560 km.

choco those 50km (which are actually 45km) will be done anyway. If we cut them from the second day we will be doing them the third day. Plus they are not extra curvy or full of corners - a couple of nice straights , a few easy 65k and 75k corners and we are back to base in whakatane.

O and we will have the advantage of leaving some of our stuff in whakatane in our rooms so we will not be so heavy.

This day can be shortened by about 100km by staying in Opotiki instead of Whakatane - obviously depends on accommodation, but this should not be a problem. If some think this makes day 1 too long (+ 50km) consider dropping or shortening the Corro loop - you can do that on any one day trip.

Vary the route on the way back. Why not do SH34 to Lake Rotorua then around the north side to Tauranga Direct road (SH36), over Kaimais on SH29 Te Aroha Gordon road to Paeroa (see the big ass bottle), through the Karangahake Gorge to Whangamata, then back over Kopu Hikuai hill and home - via Miranda is 467 km (from Opotiki).

Edit: Map now works. - Thanks for spotting that Shingo.
lake rotorua idea looks like a good way to get lost. I don't like getting lost. I'd prefer doing the coro loop backwords as it is completely different to the standart one, providing great corners and even more views that you missed on the first day coz they were behind your back. this way we get the maximum experience from the coro loop.

yep, we can cut half of coro loop on the last day and do kaiawa instead, if people feel tired or we are getting late. well said nagash.

    All good!
Better for the idea to be put out there and shot down, than for it never to be mentioned at all

The Coro loop is just a little side amusement for this trip.. it's the Gisbourne loop you wanna be setting your sites to.

Take a look on the maps, it's a fucking beast!
