Even if you don't change the plan for this ride, you guys should just file that away for future reference. If you're planning another weekend ride (I like your style) then the road from Kawerau around Rororua's lakes and up Pyes Pa Rd to Tauranga is a legend ride. Pyes Pa is one of "those" rides with very little traffic. I kind of like the look of SH33 Rotorua-Te Puke too but haven't done that one. Getting lost isn't that easy but hell. who'd care anyway

The Athenree and Karangahake Gorges are great as everyone's said, are legends. We used to do them (Auckland-Mt Maunganui) every weekend on bikes "... no racing this time guys - ok? ..." :Tui:

I don't think it's too bad at all guys. Nasty just completed the Herceptin Round NI Ride on 13 March which did Opotiki to Gisborne in a day. She hates gravel of any kind. although she mentioned it was their longest day and hardest ride she didn't say much about the gravel except that there were roadworks. I'm sure if it had been really bad I would certainly have heard about it!

Yes gas is an issue and when you do find it there's about an extra 15c/litre on the cost. You're going to have a great day.

Pyes Pa/Tauranga direct road isn't a bad ride, but it's been getting very busy over the last year or so, and overtaking opportunities are limited on a little bike.

I think they should have left a couple of k's of gravel to discourage the boat-towing riffraff

There are heaps of nice roads around the Rotorua lakes and Eastern BOP, and lots of big green Transit signs, even on some smaller roads, to help you not get lost.

Indeed... The good ol proving run from kawerau through to lake Rotoma, awesome stuff. Was fun even in the work ute Lots of straight roads gettin to and from tho. Mind you, i was always doing the straight line on the work runs out to Kawerau, so i guess i'm probably missing a lot of good roads

Doesn't look like I'll be coming now, had a crash this morning. Fucking asian driver, she stopped in the middle of the road for no reason and I slamed into the back of her and went over handlebars.

Yeah I'm fine, if it was a broken something it would be my neck or back. Thanks god I had my hoodie under my jacket (that supported my neck from breaking) + my bag that supported my back.

The driver is lucky that the cops came soon after thats all I got to say..
But the cops were really nice aye, they explained everything really good and they told me that she was stupid for stopping in the middle of the road for no reason.

Also my Insurance compay "NAC" (which I have full insurance with) said that I'll have to pay the access(spelling) of $800 because I was at fault because I should of been able to stop if she put her brakes straight on suddenally.

Not what the cops told me..

Also, shorter stops are all good, but bear in mind us poor sods at the back on GN's dont exactly have comfy seats!
my bike doesnt have the greatest comfort level either, but thats not what bikes are about.

Is anyone else keen to do the 1st day and ride back to auckland and then do the last day too?

    Preach it brotha!
But if we're at the back we could have breaks as much as we like

But yeah.. laws pretty clear on that whole thing.

If you're behind you should be able to stop.
