I like the link from the feedback back to the post. The mechanism itself is quite elegant rather than firing off a PM, embedding a link etc. It simply becomes an instant, linked short message.
Agree with what you say though (tempting to bling you just for the irony)

Wanking on about anything egotistical just turns into a facebook type race where people try to get the most "friends"...

I'm up there in the rarified strata as JR puts it and to be honest it's simply a reflection of the length of time I've been here. There are many others contributing as much or more (significantly more) than me... so the number of blingy thingies I have is a measure of what? How many blings I have!

It's like the IQ debate - it's a measure... of what? IQ! There are inferences that can be drawn from it, but at the end of the day an IQ score only reflects how good one is at sitting IQ tests.

Same with bling - it's simply a measure of popularity, and I never realised popularity was a contest. It's not, never has been never will be- except to the insecure. Ergo my want to ditch red and green, but keep the feedback side of it (for ease of use)

If I understand the technical side of things this could all be achieved in one fell swoop by simply setting everyone's bling to zero. No-one would be able to bling anyone with any points, so we'd all STAY on zero, but the feedback would persist. No code changes at all (says he never having seen the code... and knowing bog all about it except as a user)

    Yup.....

Besides, what inline does not seem to get is that Jrandom may start the poll, but he does not own it....

I believe it has more to do with being lazy and not bothering to put their brain into gear than being humbled. Unworthy maybe, but lazy, definitely.

    Well, I dunno.

Jim2's written a few posts here and there of the highest quality that have really got me thinking, and I haven't actually felt that I could add anything to them aside from a "hear hear", which I usually provide via rep.

Oh for sure. But for the most part those sort of posts are actually pretty rare. Most people (myself included) generally flick off some glib remark rather than actually think about what was said.

Also, I too give people rep rather than making a post than adds nothing other than well said. Actually, I've been known to dish out the better part of 3000 rep points in a day (there are no restrictions on Administrators in the rep system) and some people have recieved a good 300-400 points simply because a series of posts were top quality.

    You're far too kind.

It is well known that bullshit posts nets you more bling per unit effort than posting well written posts of substance. In that regard it's a good reflection of real life.

Get rid of it once and for all I say. Whilst we have the chance. "DO IT NOW"
But but but it wouldn't be KB without it. All of the sudden it would just be "another dreary and terribly serious motorcycle forum". Perish the thought!

You must be kidding! Surely this is another well thought out "bling-troll" perpetrated by Mr. jrandom. And I bet a lot of people fell for it as well

Well, a public "hear hear" serves as a bump and means that the goodness stays afloat for a while longer before disappearing into the bottomless abyss that is page 2 and beyond in any "important" subforum.

I think the idea of reputation point decay is a good one! However, let's make it more interesting and introduce exponential decay of rep points. Given that R represents your reputation point total and t denotes the time the decay can be described as:

dR/dt = k*R(t), where k obviously is a negative constant that will determine the rate of decay.

You planning on whipping out your code editor and donating the proceeds of your efforts to the commercial developers of VBulletin, then?

I doubt I could file for a patent on the exponential functions - so I don't see what you mean.

If you're asking if I'm going to code something, the answer, as it has always been and always will be, FUCK OFF! We have programmers for that kind of stuff.

Some members are more equal than others.

'Green Blings': Oh, they are meaningless. It is just a coincidence that some have kept them. It doesn't mean a thing!

P.S. Not personally bothered. Just find it amusing that some are looking for creative or destructive ways to keep themselves busy.

But that won't happen because so few people actually give a rats arse about rep.

I was always going to reset the poll to it's correct state (and have now done so) after a few hours. It's always very interesting and educational to see who comes out and gets highly offended and about what.

Thats fair enough, thanks for the explanation. What was I doing awake at that time of night anyway?

P.S. I like the blue, can I keep it please?

Maybe to you, and some others. Your positive/Negitive are almost on an even keal so that cant be bad cant it? Ok, your rep received is only in the 20's and you have been here since last July, but its ok, all in good time.
The rep system is innovative and a part of KB's DNA.
If other sites dont have it thats all good, Kiwi Biker is 'stand alone' when it comes to biker sites, the format is pretty much the same elsewhere but KB is Big Daddy ....others can only emulate.

seems to me the latter is more worthy than the absolute................

until we see 'reps per post' points and the reps can be traded for credits against some kind of motorcycling purchase; it's all bullshit and should merely be laughed at as are 13 year old kids with their hands wrapped around their dicks
I'd like to give yer some green, er brown, umm maybe blue, ummm. Oh fuck it, I just like yer post, hows that..?
If you love it, let it go. If it comes back to you, you've just high-sided!
