Firefighter loses life in cool store incident
It is with profound regret the New Zealand Fire Service advises that Senior Station Officer Derek Lovell has died from injuries sustained in an explosion and fire at a cool store facility in Tamahere yesterday afternoon.
SSO Lovell, along with seven others from his Hamilton based crew, had responded to the incident at 4pm after reports of gas fumes coming from one of the buildings in the complex. Whilst making entry into the facility, an explosion occurred that injured all eight firefighters. Derek Lovell was critically injured in the blast along with two of his colleagues but died later in Waikato Hospital. His two colleagues are still listed in a critical condition and four others are in a serious but stable condition. One firefighter has subsequently been discharged.
National Commander, Mike Hall, will be in Hamilton today extending his sympathies to Derek's family on behalf of the entire organisation. The Fire Service will be providing full support and assistance to Mr Lovell's family and to the other firefighters and their families involved in this tragic incident.
this is very sad, a number of my crew worked with, Derek, he was much respected in the Fire service both by his fellow paid/professional staff and by the volunteer crews he worked with.
My thought go out to his family and co workers..
rest in peace brother.

The only reason I only ride in the Iron man Class is I have no friends left to enter the two man events,
my own fault really.
Damn shame.
Condolences to the family, and best thoughts going out to the other fire men.![]()
My brother-in-law is a firefighter so this brings home just how dangerous the job is and how easily things can go wrong. These guys put their lives on the line for us every time they fight a fire and it is really heartbreaking to hear that one has lost his life this way.
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
Terrible news. Hold ya heads up high guys and gals in the Fire Service, best wishes and condolences to the family left behind, be it the actual man's family or to his workmates....
A sad day indeed.
Very sad newscondolences to all involved

When I am called to duty, God
Whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age,
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbour and
Protect his property
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your
protecting hand
My children and my wife.
Warr and I rode right past it all in the early hours, was still dark and it seemed to go for a long way down the road. There was heaps of smoke... trucks everywhere...
