I've been thinking the same thing... but the hard bit is making a living doing something you love vs doing something the pays enough to allow you to live.

Yaha! Dont get me wrong, I aint afraid of hard work but Im also not really cut out to be a cut throat business person raking in the $$. I would be quite happy to live a simple quiet life with a few bikes to play with and no debt. The rest of it is just to pay the bills, right?!

Agreed! I wouldn't have left my former job if it could have paid the bills. The Mrs said I had to sell the bike if I stayed in that job... so I left.

Such is the life we have created for ourselves, caught between comsumerism & capitalism. If I divided my hours worked over and above my salary, I would change jobs, so I don't.
Now if bridgestone paid me as a motorcycle tyre wear-a-outer , and paid me by the K's, I'd do it, TUI, it's your round.

Having worked in public and private sector I have found with the private sector once you have been there a while and know your worth, ask for it if you are not getting it. You don't get if you don't ask.

I am currently doing three part-time jobs all of which I am more than happy with the pay rate. These give me an hourly rate something like $15 nett (30% tax and student loan) driving a small truck, $25 nett working in retail, and $33 nett doing relief teaching. All three jobs I couldn't do full-time for long but together part-time keeps things interesting. Cost of living in Oto not too bad either which helps.

Teaching full time I was only on $48000 and stuck to the pay-scale, shit teachers got paid more because they have been in the system longer. Relief you get your salary per day but best thing is you don't have to do the after school planning and marking, which trust me is considerable if you are doing your job justice and even for a PE teacher .

Some of the jobs I know about through the places I do my driving job include, Gross - $15 spraypainting, $14 assembly of various pump parts in a factory, $14 Teacher aid (my other-half). These are all before tax so are in my opinion low paying for the work involved.

Salary for 40 hours. Sometimes do more - but get the flexability to take it back when needed.

Enjoy the job. Freedom to manage it how I like, paid pretty good for a kid with no school C

There comes a point where you can't do it all for love any more.

    Time to move on.

Other organisations out there could use a person with your skillset in better paid places.

Might I suggest a part of the transport industry that sells vehicles with lots of axles?

i'm a contractor in IT&T, i work 3 days a week, when i want. Usually only 8 hours a day. i earn .. well... when i tried to get help for the mortgage from WINZ.. they laughed.. "ahhahahaha". i told them i wasn't laughing!!; Just because i went to school and paid my taxs doesn't mean i should be laughed at ..or was it cos i is white!?

I earn enough to spend it all and still have Nothing left .. which is 6.87 times teh average hourly rate for people in Christchurch in 1995.

i get no leave, sick or holiday

It's exactly a year since I gave up working 70hrs a week or more in my own business for little or no reward. Now I'm on my 3rd job in a year - took a $5 per hour drop in pay,a car and 50% fuel costs to work locally...pushbiking 2km to work. The pay is an insult to my skill and experience....but the job is almost a semi retirement position...I have my own space and my own work, and I'm not called on to do the difficult stuff, very stress free compared to what I've done for the last 25 years. It's very difficult to get into the worker mindset of ''It doesn't fucking matter''....but I must admit it's kinda good to just turn my back on the problems.

Looking back on 38 years of employment - there is a time and place for every experience,I don't regret all the stupid mistakes I've made....I've got enough stories to keep the lunchroom happy for many years.Career has never been a part of my life....but it's good to have the 20 years of being the boss well behind me,that's well and truly out of my system.
