No, just the aforementioned Carbaryl or Petrol method. And yes, they are very feisty, so do it at night, use little or no light, and wear your leathers, etc.
The other method that works well with these little buggers is Oven cleaner in the aerosol can. It is full of caustic and you don't need to get too close.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

If you use petrol, don't light it! The blast will blow some clear and they will be very pissed off!
Leave it unlit and the raw fumes will kill them.

I don't know if they sleep, but their metabolism certainly slows down as the evening cools down, hence it is a good time to kill the little nasties!

Oh my god.. that sounds like so much fun..

    I want a wasps nest!

Definately go with the fire method, who cares if it's more or less effective. It's fire! Water pistol filled with petrol, strap a zippo to the end of it. that'd be fun.. Till the water gun catches on fire then all the petrol ignite's ad you're running around screaming "Argh! My hands on fire! What are the chances of this possibly happening?!"

Still.. it'd make a good story..
