Get some good tires. If your bike still have those Shinko's on them I would consider changing them for something better.
newbie since August 2004....
VTR250 (retired) / SV650S (Fw:Keystone19) / GSXR750(given up) / CB400(traded for 919) / CB900 Hornet / CBR954 (traded) / CBR1100XX (sold) / TuonoR (sold) / CB900 Hornet / NC700X / MTS1200 / XR250
Bought my '89 zxr250 on a Monday, and had done over 2000ks by the sunday. I got one of those phone calls that we never want to get, but are inevitable (Dad had a heart attack). Oh well, on my new bike and save on fuel. Traveled from Masterton (North of Wellington) to Dunedin and back to Oamaru in one day (about 1000 kms). VERY sore arse, forearms, wrists and knees. Aching face from grinning all the way there (the ride, not the reason). My little kwaka did it flawlessly, and not very legally either. Hehehe. On the way home, she threw the chain off in timaru, due to me forgetting to lube it. Huge thanks to the guys at Timaru Honda, helped me out on the side of the road on a saturday. Got going and made the ferry home.
I would not recomend traveling that sort of distance on one day. I was absolutly shagged, and I don't think my concentration was at its peak by the end of it. Awsome ride though, and i want to do it again, but for a better reason.
P.S., 2 weeks later (last week), I took the bike back to the shop to get a funny rattle looked at. The mechanic took it out for a ride, and he had the slight problem of a conrod not staying where it should. Very large hole in the front of the motor. Bugger. No problem to the boys at Langlands, they covered the problem (only had it 3 weeks). I picked up my new bike today (Honda Hornet) with no fuss at all. Thanks guys.
left wanganui on x-mas eve last year, up the west coast and all the way up to cape reinga and then back in time for cemitry curcit boxing day races, 1000ks a day, good times
1000km days are huge.
I did 750km to Gissy and back home via the eastcoast with some boys from KB. I was stuffed for the last hour or so, was past enjoying it and just need to get home.
On my lil cbr I try to keep it about 500km a day and I am still fresh and enjoy myself heaps more.
LOL. yeah i did a Napier to Auckland on my FXR. was my first ride on a motorbike other than my one lesson i had at a riding school to get my basic handling skills! that was a wicked way to learn.
Wellington to Taupo was my longest ride. Did it on one tank of fuel :P
Longest trip I ever did on my 250 was Wellywood to Warkworth, left @ 7am arrived late afternoon sometime. Travelled the West Coast, S.I. on my mates RGV - that was fun.
I dunno why some people get hung up about doing large distances on such bikes, its no different on a bigger bike. U might still encounter the same if not a similar problem (if you ever have one at all), its the rider that is the big difference.
Doing the GC on a 125 would be pretty cool.
It is what it is
I'm going to Wellington (I live in Auckland) on bike with my flatmate in October, that will be the furthest south I've ever been on bike. I've done the same amount of k's from here to there before (about 650) in one day but that was a big loop around the upper part of the North Island.
I am looking forward to doing it as last time I tried going to Wellington on my red 250cc Hyosung I crashed and wrote the bike off, however I don't think that will happen this time as I am far wiser on the road, I have awesome tyres on the bike now, I'm going to break the trip up, will make sure I get a good sleep before hand and I will be riding with someone else who is quite experienced.
Looking forward to it and hoping the weather will be good. I'm also going to pop into the house of the lady who looked after me after I crashed the old red bike and give her a gift to say thank you.
What you have in your heart will be revealed through what you have in your life.
If things are going badly in our circumstances, the answer to what is happening to us outwardly is more often than not found in the mirror.
