Does he need all the gears and shafts or can he just replace the faulty pair. Would probably be cheaper that way?

Another option may be getting the gear repaired
someone like Duralloy or Mike Jones Gears

I used Mike Jones years ago to have some TZ gearbox bits repaired and the service was ok and wasn't overly expensive
Just check around wreckers for a complete R703 engine, that's all that's used in SE & SF katanas and the ES,EF variants of the same generation
