    Meths in fuel tank?

    Is this advisable??

    - i think i may have water in the fuel bowls. Would half a bottle of meths in the tank 'flush' the water out??

A couple of pple have done this on the forum - just wondering if this is the best remedy.
would this damage the internals in anyway??

.. or should i be trying to locate the grub screw to drain the bowl?? (which i have no idea where to look?)

the idea is to complety drain your petrol tank of fuel then pour a little bit of meths in, swirl it around and let it evaporate naturally to rid moisture from your tank, this will have little effect on the water in your carbies. your best bet is to drain the carbies like you have said.

I was "told" that if you add meths to the tank then water binds to the ethanol (meths is ethanol) and passes through the system......

See if you can get some Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)...not sure, but you may need a police permit to buy it...

Simplest way I know of is to drain the carbs... All the ones I've come across have a drain screw in them for exactly this reason.

Water sinks to the bottom of the tank, and settles in the bottom of the bowls of the carbs.

Turn off the fuel, drain the carbs (while engine is NOT hot)... turn on fuel again.

    Repeat if necessary

Otherwise yes, Meths does the trick. It absorbs water and mixes into the petrol (thereby carrying the water through the combustion chanber and taking it away) but... I don't see the point of doing that on a bike considering the drains built in. Maybe in a car?

IPA and meths do their job by dropping the surface tension of the water to the point where instead of sitting in 'globules' that won't go through a jet, it breaks up into small enough bits that will pass through. Expect the engine to not run to it's peak while this is going on.
I think MDU has said it best....drain what you can, repeat, then treat the fuel that's left.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

So you reckon it wont perform at its best? we used to toss it in the fuel tank on the chopper if the fuel was a bit suss, never actually crashed, amazing what faith, ignorance, and adrenalin can achieve!!

Shit mate dont drink the meths they sell here.

I contains 2% Methanol which is extreamly poisionious.

Thats why they attach a poision label to every bottle.

The best solution is to drain the float bowls, but it looks like you're doing that anyway. The screw should be near the nipple on the bottom of the float bowl.

TOP TIP: Hold a big wedge of kitchen towel or similar under the nipple when you undo the grub screw to stop the fuel pissing everywhere over your engine. It'll get saturated pretty quick, but you don't need to drain them for more than 4-5 seconds at full piss anyway.

For future ref, here's the technical bit: the reason I heard the meths trick works is because meths is more volatile/'lighter'/whatever than 91 or 98 octane fuel. Petrol 'goes off' after a couple of weeks as the lighter fractions evaporate. Result - it won't spark or ignite as easily. A capful of meths can help bring it back to its 'fresh' volatility, so it'll spark more easily.
