Thumbs up Well worth the ride down

    Awesome ride!

First proper offroad event for myself, learnt a shitload of techniques. Riding down that near 70 degree hillside down into Transmission Gully was the biggest challenge for myself. (Must gear the DR down one...) Loved Section 7 even if we got held up by some big orange chicanes stuck on the clay hills!

Thanks to John and crew for the excellent time! I am envious of your playground..... Will be back in 2010 with more experience under my belt and will be able to take in the views a bit more (instead of hanging on for dear life!) We did the 42nd Traverse on the way down on Friday, which I greatly thank for doing as it semi-prepared me for the CCA.

Was great to finally meet some fellow KBers and put a face to the name. So who is going to organise a KB Adventure event next?

Had my Zumo onboard, so will hopefully be able to download some of the tracks we did. Did anyone else get any GPS info?

BTW Made the trip home non-stop (except fuel) direct from Whitby to Auckland in 7 hours. Weather was great till we reached Taumaranui where it pissed till Ngarawhahia. Had 2 inches of water in my boots till we could pull over and get the wets on....... And yes, our arses DID hurt!

Yep you did. The first photo from the post I've quoted has a couple of likely looking fullers standing up looking to the right holding cans of some of the North Island finest!? I'm on the right and El Scooto is on the left. Had a bloody awesome time and it was great to meet so many of you all.

I'll put pics up soon. Don't have many - to busy enjoying the riding.

    Cheers R

P.S. Got a GPS track log of the whole thing which I'll put up as a Google Earth file (kml) over on Johns thread later on today. I need to edit out my navigational errors first (actually I did this last night but I forgot to send the file to work)

Looks like a great ride, if I had a bike for the job I would have joined in (was considering using the 50cc scooter as a joke)

Mate of mine went along (Red 08 KLR650) so I'm sure I'll hear the full report from him.
Oh well 2 years to try and get hold of an off roader
I finally got my knee down! …and my shoulder …and my pillion’s head.

    That's the easy answer.
Other way is to Export them from iPhoto and pick a size.
thanks Skunk - will try that tonight from home. Merv's the man when it comes to being a prolific photographer isn't he? Cheers Aslan

Ok here is my few pics. Camera is on the way out so they are not too flash.

    1 Start (obviously)
2 Looking south just after the "fenceline" run
    3 Lunch
4 Cannon Trig looking southish at Welly
    5 Happy camper (El Scooto)
6 Chch crew tying down on the Awahura.

Must say El Scooto did bloody well riding the poor little TTR 250 raid all the way from Chch and back. He's not a little fuller and with gear it had a fair load. Almost didnt make it as the pumper diaphragm in the carb died the Sunday prior and thanks to raiding Skinny Birdman's TTR, ES managed to get it back together just before we left on Thursday night. While doing the CCA something blocked the pilot jet so it wouldn't idle for the ride back down. Few turns on the idle speed adjuster fixed this - about 2500/3000 rpm for a lumpy cam sounding idle

    Cheers R

Thanks cooneyr for your pics - I didn't envy you guys in tents.

As for GPS tracks I had a look at mine and didn't bother posting it in the end because it was so full of bad readings - I have the Garmins GPSMap76CS, a marine model really, nice and waterproof for on the bike, but its reception in trees is obviously very poor as the track shoots all over the place. I remember it lost reception in Puketiro last time but with the ride doing so much more in the trees like Hydro Rd it was pretty hopeless through there basically being for a fair bit of the afternoon.

Great to meet you guys, see you again.
    Cheers

Most of my CCA pic's were crap. But the ride there, and home again are worth a mention.
Crisis and myself had a looksy through Kaitieke valley on the way to Welly, and Turakina Valley was shining on the way home.
It's going to take a very good future ride to top the weekend just gone.

Pic1. Kaitieke Valley floor, first thing in the morning.

Pic2. Looking towards Whanganui river valley from the top of Fisher's Track.

    Pic3. Turakina valley.

    Pic4. Also Turakina valley.

Ah, there you go Merv! I shoulda known I'd find you here on KB. Great pics and patter, from you and the rest. And Hi Aslan, looking forward to seeing your art work as well, when you get it sorted. I lost contact with you guys through frequent stops to help bogged down riders in the clay uphills in the bush - they were blocking the track so needed to be pointed in the right direction and encouraged to keep their back wheel in the same rut as the front one.
I also will have a crack at loading a few of my own pics when I get a quiet moment. Went back up through the Belmont Road/Takapu Road section late yesterday with 4-skins to liberate his DR650. I'll have a shot at loading the 'jail break' now, it deserves air space even if it is a bit ghostly. Cheers, Re-cycled

It wasn't me, and despite talking to him for some time, didn't get the name. However I do know the bars were built by Damon at Cycleworks in Lower Hutt (Damon does most excellent blacksmithery)
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.
