I work in video production; I shoot and edit video for businesses, for education, and for TV broadcast. I've been doing this for about 15 years, so I think I know a thing or two about what makes a good image (moving and still). For some projects I've had to commission still photography, and I've even had to reject photos by a well-known local commercial photographer (who I consider a very good photog) for one project for not being good enough.

I've also got a reasonably good SLR and like to take the occasional photo when I get a chance. Mostly I take "snaps" when I'm just trying to record an event for posterity, like most people, but occasionally when I put some effort in I can get some good pictures. I've attached a couple to demonstrate. The first two are from the Thunder Ride on this year's Hog Rally, which I think are comparable to the weekend. Evaluated to a "professional" standard these are really not very good - the first one's very noisy as it was rescued from a picture that was considerably underexposed, and the second one's just too wide (I want to get a longer lens for my SLR but I'm trying to save for a new bike atm ). The third's one is one of my better ones that I have to hand, and I'm relatively pleased with it - I like the composition and depth of field and the talent was posing nicely for the camera - but I had a bit of time to get it right.

Trying to get individual stills of all the bikes on a ride like Saturday is tricky, apart from just getting ahead of the pack to get into position. You need a decent camera, but you also need a lens with a bit of "length" to get in close, and you need a fast memory card that can dump the very large image without taking forever and causing you to miss the next 3 bikes going past. A professional SLR is fast enough to take 2 or 3 photos of each bike so you can pick & choose the best shots. At $1600 when I bought it 2 years ago my camera's just fast enough, but I don't have the lens or memory card to do the job.

I cant remember what it stands for but it prepares the photo for printing I dont use it at all on my camera. Mainly cause I dont print anything.

Have you got piacasa? fantastic program for organising and basic editing of photos. And its free.

Hey guys can either of answer this for me. If I have a low res pic, is there anyway to improve the image to make it clearer?

Think Coyboyz answered that one for me but waits with baited breath (wheres me tooth brush) to see if it is possible !
I shrunk my original 2.5 meg pics down to 60 odd kb to fit them on here but didn't save the originals (duh) lost some good res out of them !
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

Only on TV. This particular bit of techno BS is used on every single crime show in existence and drives all of us who know better absolutely crazy.

No, sorry. No way no how.

Then how did 'they' catch that kiddy fiddler who posted his face all skewed...
Seems there is technology out there that can extrapolate to undo stuff.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Ahhh that one is easy to explain. The spiral effect he used didn't change the information in the image very much. He certainly didn't reduce the resolution as has been discussed here. All he really did was move the pixels around in a spiral pattern. Because they were moved in a predictable manner the computer boffins were able to re-create the reverse effect.

So you'd better knock it off MSTRS - they'll get you in the end

    As Ride organiser

I have removed all references and posts in relation to the photographer who was on the ride saturday.

I do not support her trying to make money off a charitable event, when no money would be donated back to that charity. After everyone else has generously donated to the cause I find that very disappointing.

Its been a learning curve and one that will not be repeated in future. Obviously no one can stop a photographer from attending such event, however more questions on their intentions will need to be clarified prior to the said event.

That will be the end of the discussion on this subject. If you wish to make further comments please pm me

Email from The Square Trust Rescue Helicopter

ok guys our approximation of money made was almost spot on as you can see by Jarrod's email ..also note how the money raised is going to be spent the EZ-IO is approximate $700 and from his explanation when a central line can not be put into a patient this appliance can be drilled into the bone to get a line in.

So thank you to everyone who came & donated, the money is being put to very good use.

    Hi,

I have just been down to the bank and deposited $1324 from the weekend.

A great result, thank you for your help and look forward to your article.

As discussed we will use the money for an EZ-IO intraosseous Infusion System (replacing the standard IV line when required). The remaining money we will use for the new Zoll defibrillator. I’ll let you know when it arrives at the base.

    Regards

    Jarrod

Now that is taking your position as a moderator a bit too far Chancey.

Hell a request for a link to a group pic by Elysium was even removed and as was those replying to this request.

For those interested your posts are in the "Pointless Drivel" thread.
