    LTSA / WOF / W**nkers

Dropped our 1993 Toyota Sceptor off at the local garage this morning. Just had a ring to say we are not going to get a warrant, because there is a TV in the dash, that gets no reception, but will work (has power). There is also a tyre without required tread depth.

This car has been in NZ for 10 years now. Mechanic reckons he rang LTSA and they said "fail it". I just rang them to confirm - they guy said "I'd pass it". Great stuff.

This vehicle had a full pre-purchase inspection 3 weeks ago. The AA guy explained the concept of "point in time" to me. The tyre passed no worries then. 3 weeks (and less than 200km) later, it fails. Wow. 3 months i can understand.... 3 weeks?

Anybody know how to disconnect an import sceptor tv? can't see any wires to clip. Fuse diagram is jappa. Can't just smash screen (might look dodge for resale).

Those frontseat TVs are set so that they don't work when the car is in Drive. Not that this deters Japanese drivers who have developed to an artform the practice of watching TV whilst coasting in neutral.

Begs the question as to whether the LTNZ has a policy on the location and viewing of in-car DVDs (all the rage for the Pajero set for Christmas, I imagine)...

Tyres are day of issue, same as the whole WoF,always has been - you could park it up for 6 mths,or go to Dunedun the next day.I've had tyres I passed down to the steel belt the next day.TV can't work, except to show a rearward view in reverse, always been a rule - but it's due for a change with factory fit GPS coming in.

The goods have to be fit for the purpose intended and of merchantable quality.

If you bought this car two weeks ago, it's the dealers problem.

Like all "rules" - open to interpretation. Which is obvious to me, since the Sockburn Testing Station in Chch has passed it for warrant 6 years in a row.

The words "Can't work". As in can't get any watchable picture (static), or you can't even power it up? Interpretation.

As for the tyres, i understand, except these are in (practically) the same condition as the AA check 3 weeks ago. Less than 200km. In my books the guy has made a judgement call. We'll replace anyway since common sense says they must be close to buggered if two people can make two different judgements.

I'm more annoyed really at paying $100 for an AA check and three weeks later we can't get a warrant.

Cool man - my plan is to switch the car onto acc/on (or woteva) pull the fuses in the kickbox one by one until the tv stops goin. Then reset the clock, blah blah blah. Does that sound like a plan?

Will hook up at some stage anyway man - sounds like you were comin on a ride at some stage...

Yep that sounds like a plan. The only potential pitfall would be if the fuse that protected the TV also protected something else as well. Not likely as a tv tends to pull more current than most other vehicle circuits so is likely to be running on a stand alone circuit. Once you've found the right fuse make sure you check all you other electrical goodies in order to make sure they work. Including indicators, stop lights etc.

Coming on a ride - love to - where n when just let me know.

Your AA check was NOT a WoF check. And as I said - I've failed a vehicle for a WoF on tyres, then the very next day have the tyre guy say...''which tyre did you fail?''....'left rear, can't you read the check sheet?'....''well the left front is showing the steel belt'' It passes on the day of inspection, the very next day it can be illeagal, this can't be passed back onto the WoF inspector.

Those TV in cars were kinda ignored for a long time because they were just irelavent, but now they are becoming an issue and looked at - I get real sick of hearing ''but it passed the last 6 WoFs like that''....yeah,well it doesn't pass today mate.

That sounds like a plan. A plan so cunning, you could stick a tail on it, and call it a weasel...

So the maturbatorial folx at the LTSA won't go for it.
    They'll say, "But wottif?"
"Wottif someone puts the fuse back in?"
"Wottif you've just turned it off somewhere and turn it back on when you drive outta here?"

And then you'll get so riled up at their misuse of the tiny bit of bureaucratic power they have, that you'll then go, "Wottif I stick my boot up your arse if you don't stop pissin' me around!?!?"

    And then you'll be

And then you'll have to ditch the WeirdAndNotSoWunnerful Toymotor Septic with the It'sWorkingIt'sNotWorking TV set and buy a Proper Automobile.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Liek most things these days i have to ask where common sense applies and where the check sheet starts. How can we look at something that DOESN"T WORK? and it NEVER will?

And if it's so clear cut, why did the LTSA bloke who deals with these issues just recommend that i pass his number to the WOF guy so he could sort it out for us??????????????????????????????????

I'd be just as happy if the jappa's never stuck this SHIT in in thr first place.

    And yeah, i realise the pre-purchase wasn't a WOF.

"But feel the quality. You get so much extra, so many doodads with these used Japanese imports."

Like I said - buy a Proper Automobile.

No, no; absolutely no need to thank me, Old Chap. My advice comes for free.

Hunkers down behind the wealth of bulletproofing afforded by the extra dooddads and gizmos of some "fine" Toymotor ED Exciting Version broken down at the side of the road, its puny engine overwhelmed by the strain of all the doodads and lack of maintenance and love...

LTSA will never know. Just told Mr WOF man (who is just doin wot he's told i suppose) that's what i'd do, and he happily replied (arond the edge of a tasty lookin chicken sandwhich) "yup mate, that'll do it...".

Viffy viffy viffy. So many more posts than me... but you've (unusally) missed the point. It's HER car. SHE luvs it. She bought it. I MUST make it go, or she will be unhappy. Here's some qik math:

SHE's unhappy = I'M unhappy. Not because i wanna be, just because the secret school attended by all those of the female persuasion teaches that's how it MUST be. And the universe agrees wholeheartedly somehow. I thinks it's rule # 1, you know?
