    Polycystic Kidney Disease (feline)

Had to have Sweep (our beautiful black and white Persian boy) put to sleep on Monday.

He took ill very suddenly with renal failure. Took him to the vet on Sunday with a 'I think there's something wrong with him' and by the end of Monday he was gone

He was only 6 years old.

Given his age, his breed and the speed with which his kidneys failed, we're pretty certain it was PKD. We also lost our other Persian boy, Mop, to PKD 4 years ago.

It's the same as PKD in humans and affects Persians mostly. It is easily eradicated, but so many breeders won't accept its existence due to the fact that they would need to retire their affected breeding cats. We never knew about it when we got our Persians, but we sure as heck will make sure we go to a PKD-free breeder next time.

So sad about losing Sweep. He was a gorgeous boy. He was up with me every time I had to do a night feed with James - don't think I could have got through those lonely night feeds without him!

Ah chick, that sux! Id be soo sad if I lost my baby, its amazing how your pet becomes your best friend!

I know what your going through though, I had a cat that had the same thing when he was young too. We ended up having to put him to sleep as he couldnt control himself and pee'd everywhere and was in alot of pain. You did the best thing you could do for him!

Sorry to hear Jude. Time will help I hope.
We lost one of ours (Dangermouse) to the road weekend before, can't believe how hard it is on the house monkeys (us).

Awww so sorry to hear that Jude. Hugs to you.

Ive got an awful reputation with animals.
Thomasina Cat Aged 13 (Cancer of the nose)
Sooty Cat Aged 7 (drowned in a swimming pool.. told the kids she ran away)
Sasha Cat Aged 3 (ran away when I moved house)
Sam Dog Aged 7 (Hit by train)
Butter Cat 9 weeks (just sickly)

Even though its hard, I'm going to go to the SPCA soon to get a Cat, probably a mature cat to introduce to my family. Even though its sad Jude when they pass away, you have to remember the good times and how they enjoyed their time with you so many animals are mistreated by their owners, and your little cat was loved.
